A new report from the Wrestling Observer has revealed that the AEW backstage drama is worse than many thought. This has led top stars to be ‘close to breaking point’ following the latest CM Punk situation.
In this weeks Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer detailed the backstage issues in AEW.
He noted the issues stemmed from Colt Cabana being removed from AEW TV due to CM Punk.
A report last month from Fightful revealed that multiple members of the AEW roster ‘went to bat’ for Colt Cabana. This led to Tony Khan keeping Cabana, but moving him to the ROH roster.
Meltzer went on to say there has been “a ton of backstage drama involving many of the top guys that has gotten much worse in recent weeks. It feels like a number of people are close to their breaking point if things don’t get settled.”
AEW Owner Tony Khan has yet to comment on these reports. However, Khan is known to be a reader of the Newsletter, so is certainly aware of the claims.
What Led To The AEW Backstage Drama?
This news comes after a report from Fightful gave a worrying update on the future of CM Punk in AEW. The report claimed a source near to Punk revealed he considered no showing AEW Dynamite due to the issues.
During the show, CM Punk called out Hangman Page, a segment which was not planned. Later in the show it was announced Punk vs Moxley had been moved to next weeks AEW Dynamite. Many presumed this match would be taking place at AEW All Out in September.
However, it is not necessarily a certainty that the match was moved due to the backstage drama. The Observer Newsletter also revealed that AEW are aiming to improve their TV ratings, ahead of their new TV deal negotiations in the fall. One tactic AEW are considering is bringing back MJF, who hasn’t been seen on AEW TV in months.
