With TNA recently announcing its second ever women’s Ultimate X match, it made me ponder who the participants could possibly be. With this revamp bringing in a ton of new eyes to the product, it will be a good idea to showcase a lot of the names in the knockouts division while also potentially showcasing newly signed ones (*wink wink*).

Also, before I get into the article, I do want to qualify that I’m assuming it’ll be a five-way, as a lot of Ultimate X’s are around that number.

Tasha Steelz

She won the first one, so it’s only right that she’s in the second.

The former Knockouts World Champion has barely shown up in 2023, so this is a good opportunity to set her up for another long-term run. Sure, she’s been on and off on TV, but it’s only right to have her try and defend her knockouts Ultimate X crown. She would also be a great candidate to win it, as there’s a good amount of interest in a potential Tasha Steelz vs. Trinity match (assuming Trinity retains, of course).

Gisele Shaw

Gisele feels like a no-brainer.

Out of all the women in this article, Gisele is the only one who has had the most consistent showcase on TV. She’s always a feature and has been heavily involved with Trinity, Deonna Purrazzo, and Jordynne Grace in recent months. It’s good to have a recurring talent in this match, as it adds some credibility to the match in general for recurring viewers and gives the match some name value. If anyone in this article was to be a lock-in, I would say Gisele.

Harley Hudson

TNA’s most recently signed knockout!

Unknown to most, the young Scouser, Harley Hudson, is the most recent signing to TNA’s knockouts division. At only 21 years old, she was signed by TNA on their recent UK tour after winning the female gut-check competition.

Her in-ring skills are unknown to practically all TNA fans, so giving her a chance in this match could end up giving her a real breakout performance. A good performance in this match is the best way to start off her TNA career, and with it being a gimmick match, they should be able to hide her weaknesses and really highlight her strengths early on.

One Of The Released WWE Talent

With Hard To Kill happening after the 90-day non-compete clauses are up, I wouldn’t be shocked to see a fair share of the released talent signing with TNA (fingers crossed for Ali and MxM). Two names that spring to mind when it comes to a former WWE talent being in this match specifically are Dana Brooke and Tenille Dashwood. They were the two most high-profile female talents that were released and would suit the knockouts division. Obviously, Tenille has had her run, so I would personally go with Dana for this spot, as she deserves a chance to prove her naysayers wrong and show that she may actually be quite good in the ring (something she wasn’t really able to prove in the WWE).

And Finally, Who I Think Should Be Winning It…

KiLynn King

I cannot stress enough how great she is!

Ever since signing with TNA, KiLynn has shown how great she is in the ring. She’s got a really bright future ahead of her. She’s a great powerhouse, and TNA should not hesitate in hoisting up to the main event. There may be stigma around her from new viewers after her time in AEW, but I can promise you that she’s improved immensely since then.

Plus, if she wins, we either get another match against Trinity (the first one was great) or we get her going one-on-one with Jordynne in a woman’s hoss fight, which sounds amazing on paper.

It’s a big night for Impact Wrestling, as Deonna Purrazzo gets her rematch against Trinity in the main event of the show. Along with this three other titles are on the line, with Rascalz vs Subculture for the tag belts, MK Ultra in a four way for the Knockouts tag belts, and Johnny Swinger competing for the Digital Media championship against Kenny King. We also see Eric Young return to his home country, in an attempt to vanquish the Design for good, as he takes on Deaner in a No Disqualification match. He’s not the only home-country hero, as Josh Alexander has his first match back in an Impact Wrestling ring, in eight man tag action. All this and more!

Countdown Results:

Mike Bailey def. Alan Angels

JOYA def. The Good Hands

GREAT No DQ: Eric Young vs Deaner

Some unique blue lighting for the show tonight, not sure how I feel about it, too dark for me. That being said, I do like the stage design however, looks nice. The match itself was an unsurprisingly violent match, to cap off an incredibly violent feud. A wide assortment of weapons are used, with my personal highlight being the staple gun, which Deaner gruesomely shoots between EY’s fingers and in his armpit. The crowd are active throughout this match, with them chanting “You still suck” at Deaner, after he smashes EY round the head with a chair, whilst a trashcan is over his head. I really enjoyed this match, Deaner stood his own, and the two had a really entertaining match. The use of weapons was well done, and we got multiple entertaining spots out’ve it. With the Toronto crowd firmly behind Young, it added tension to the match, and the loud crowd reactions really got me into it. The finish comes after EY ends up hitting both Kon & Deaner simultaneously (yes simultaneously, genuinely crazy feat of strength) with a DVD onto the barbed wire board, which he follows by piledriving Deaner onto the barbed wire board. Great finish to a great match. Eric Young finally vanquishes his own creation.

Result: Eric Young by Pinfall via. Piledriver

Bailey Higham WR Star Rating – 3.75 Stars

Joe Hendry and Yuya Uemura are interviewed next. Gia asks Joe about how this team came about, and Joe talks about how he can’t stay a solo artist his whole life. Yuya then snatches the mic out’ve Gia’s hand and asks “CAN I GET A JOYA!”, Gia then complies. I know there’s people who won’t like this, but I was entertained, and I really want this team to go far.

Next we see Taylor Wilde hurt backstage, with her Coven partner, KiLynn King accusing Jody Threat of being the attacker. King is obviously frustrated, as her tag title match is up next, but Santino somewhat eases her concerns, as she still gets to be in the match, but with Jody Threat as her partner.

GOOD Knockouts Tag Team Title: MK Ultra vs Death Dollz vs Gisele Shaw and Savannahs Evans vs Jody Threat and KiLynn King

This was an enjoyable match, with the two main storylines/arks of the match being Jody and King not getting along, and the Death Dollz having the best tag team psychology. Both storylines were presented well and played out well. The match picks up more, and gets more chaotic as it goes on, with MK Ultra securing the win, by simultaneously dumping Rush on the head.

Result: MK Ultra by Pinfall

Bailey Higham WR Star Rating – 3.00 Stars

Enjoyable Swinger interview before the match, not that much to comment on.

AVERAGE Digital Media Title: Johnny Swinger vs Kenny King

This is the most competitive Johnny Swinger match you’ll ever see, with Swinger outsmarting King at nearly every turn early on. At one moment, we get a glimmer of hope that the Swingman may have done it, as Heath delivers a wake up call to King, behind the referees back. Sadly, he was unsuccesful, and was put down quickly after with a royal flush. Fun match, obviously nothing great, but it was fun.

Result: Kenny King by Pinfall via. Royal Flush

Bailey Higham WR Star Rating – 2.50 Stars

King’s assault on Swinger after the match is broken up by a crowd of road agents and referees. One of the people protecting Swinger is Tommy Dreamer, who is later attacked by King, setting up that rivalry. I’ve never been more uninterested in a potential future match.

Entertaining promo from Alexander and Time Machine next. Good fun, and nice build to the eight man tag.

MUST WATCH Tag Team Title: Subculture vs The Rascalz

This match was a beautiful romance of British and X-Division style wrestling. They built up this match well, as it ends up picking up in an incredible manor, and I get to witness some of the best tag team sequences I’ve ever seen. I was going to deduct this 0.25 stars for the interference of the Good Hands and the ABC, but they make up for this with the awesome moment of Dani Luna diving onto the Good Hands. This amazing tag match is capped of with a title change, as the Rascalz are able to take the win with a nasty foot stomp/burning hammer combination.

Result: The Rascalz by Pinfall via Foot stomp/burning hammer combination

Bailey Higham WR Star Rating – 4.75 Stars

We then get a promo from the heel team in the eight man tag. I enjoyed this one a lot more, as Bully embraces Lio, and officially lets him join their group text. We also see Lio mention PCO, which is good continuity, and adds some tension between the heels for later on.

Back to School Match: Frankie Kazarian vs Eddie Edwards

I always like when Impact do cinematic segments/matches and this is no exception. This was really interesting. While I wasn’t the biggest fan of the match move-wise, I really liked the dynamic they had here. Eddie repeatedly reminded Kaz of his accomplished, and called Kaz a failure to his mentor. I don’t think I can rate this, due to it being cinematic, but I liked what they tried here.

Result: Eddie Edwards by Pinfall via Boston Knee Party

This segment ends with Eddie smashing Kaz over the head, with a picture of Kowalski. They then situate the camera similar to Walter White’s death scene, with Kaz laying down helpless next to the picture of his trainer. Kaz is now at his lowest point, it’ll be interesting to see where he goes from here.

AMAZING SANADA vs Jake Something

I was highly anticipating this match, and it lived up to all my expectations. SANADA spent most of the match trying to work over the bigger man, as Something just used his power advantage to dominate at times. This match go “this is awesome” chants, which is a good representative of how good the match was. Even in defeat, Something had a great performance, that really made me believe that he could be main eventing for Impact later on down the line.

Result: SANADA by Pinfall via. Deadfall

Bailey Higham WR Star Rating – 4.25 Stars

The two men shake hands after the match, which was understandable, as Something took SANADA to the limit.

GREAT Brian Myers, Bully Ray, Moose and Lio Rush vs Josh Alexander and Time Machine

This tag match was simply hectic. Every man got a good amount of stuff in as things got going. Canada is the best place for Alexander’s first match back (in an Impact ring), as the crowd were raucous for him, and most of the moves he did. As soon as the referee is assassinated by Brian Myers, the chaos goes up by tenfold, as with no tag rules, it’s every man for themselves, with Sabin crashing through a table soon after the ref is taken out. This is soon followed by KUSHIDA going through a table, thanks to a final hour from Rush. Two awesome spots back-to-back. As Bully looks to put Shelley through one next, the lights go out, and PCO shows up, to a big ovation. Bully and the Most Professional Wrestling Gods triple powerbomb PCO through the table, but he immediately gets up as Hannifan shouts “HES ALIVE!” in a funny nod to Frankenstein. As PCO looks to chase away Bully Ray again, STEVE MACLIN RETURNS. He takes out PCO and stares down Josh Alexander, teasing the match we never got. The two then brawl, until they’re separated by security. Josh then starts selling an arm injury, which he got from Maclin. This is soon followed by Shelley leaving the match after he miscommunicates with Josh, finally adding some much needed tension to their future affair (hopefully we get Shelley vs Alexander vs Maclin in the main event of Bound For Glory). As Shelley leaves, Moose take advantage and spears Alexander for the win.

Result: Moose by Pinfall via. Spear

Bailey Higham WR Star Rating – 3.50 Stars

This match did really well in building towards the future matches between Alexander, Shelley and Maclin, along with building towards Rush vs Sabin/KUSHIDA and PCO vs Bully. Really fun match aswell.

I always forget to mention this in the reviews, but Trinity’s hair is incredible. She’s made it look like the Canadian flag, which looks really nice.

Before the main event, we’re greeted with the announcement that Gail Kim will be the special guest commentator for tonight.

AMAZING Knockouts World Title: Trinity vs Deonna Purrazzo

Quite the opposite of the Subculture match. A bombastic main event that gets you interested with big moves right away. Both women gave it their all here, with some nasty offence being shown throughout (with one of the best spots being Deonna spiking Trinity’s head into the floor early on). Trinity shown some good psychology here, with some arm selling stopping a starstruck at one point, and forcing her to use her legs for the starstruck in the finish. Amazing match, love seeing the knockouts main event.

Result: Trinity by Submission via. Starstruck

Bailey Higham WR Star Rating – 4.25 Stars

The show then ends with the announcement of Will Ospreay at Bound For Glory, which is pretty awesome. Hopefully we get that match against Mike Bailey that was supposed to happen at the first Multiverse United. That being said, Rich Swann would also be a pretty cool opponent.

Overall…

It was a good PPV for Impact Wrestling, as the Canadian crowd came through and made it a night to remember. While Trinity and Deonna impressed in the main event, I would have to give match of the night to Subculture vs The Rascalz, as they tore the house down. The return of Steve Maclin was also one to remember, and the revelation that he may actually be facing Alexander down the line, must be relieving to Impact Wrestling fans. Furthermore, We were treated to a very interesting match between Kazarian and Eddie Edwards, which was another enjoyable showcase of how good Impact can be when they use the cinematic format. The eight-man tag and opener were both good, chaotic fun, which made a good use of weapons, with EY finally putting the Design to rest in the opener. SANADA vs Jake Something was also a highlight, which did exactly what it intended to do, in showcasing the talents of both men. Great show overall, rarely any misses on this event.

On the road to Emergence, the tag team title number one contenders tournament kicks off, as Mike Bailey & Jonathan Gresham take on Trey Miguel and Zachary Wentz, of the Rascalz. The show will also be kicked off with Impact Knockouts World Champion Trinity. Along with this, the Digital Media Championship is on the line, as new champions, Kenny King, takes on Yuya Uemura and, former champion, Joe Hendry in a three way match. We will also see Alan Angels take on Heath and Eric Young respond to the Design, after their brutal attack last week.

GOOD Trinity/Deonna Purrazzo/The Coven Promo

Trinity is back in the building where she made her Impact debut. Deonna interrupts a wholesome Trinity promo, and warns her that nobody beats Deonna Purrazzo twice. We then get the Coven, who are evidently upset from their loss last week, address Trinity, before attacking her, causing a chaotic brawl between all four women. Santino comes out, and is pressured to make the tag match for right then and there, and now Trinity & Deonna face the Coven, while not even in their ring gear. Fun promo, got crazy in the end when they brought security into the ring. Deonna also hesitates before helping Trinity, but it’s nothing we haven’t seen before.

Bailey Higham WR Star Rating – 3.00 Stars

GREAT Trinity and Deonna Purrazzo vs The Coven

While I have enjoyed the Trinity and Deonna matches, aspects of the feud itself have been underwhelming, as they’ve mostly been “can they co-exist” tag matches. We get our first “can they co-exist” trope, when Deonna stops Trinity from punching Wilde in the corner. The Coven are a very underrated tag team, and show it with tons of great offence on Trin and Deonna here. We get “this is awesome” chants, after everyone is left down, from a great exchange. The Coven are able to get the win after Trinity accidentally hits Deonna in all the chaos, and King gets a big win after hitting Deonna with the King’s Curse.

Result: KiLynn King by Pinfall via. King’s Curse

Bailey Higham WR Star Rating – 3.50 Stars

The Rascalz hype up their match later in the night, as it’s their first match in Impact in three years. Scott D’Amore has to spoil the fun however, as he reveals to them that he’s fined them 2 weeks pay, for re-entering the arena last week (which makes sense professionally, but he is killing the vibe).

Jody Threat comes to the defence of Tracy Brooks, as Alisha is bragging about running her out’ve impact. Jody vs Alisha is made for next week, which is good, assuming it builds to Kaz & Tracy vs Alisha and Eddie.

AVERAGE Heath vs Alan Angels

This match was worked well, no prevalent botches. Just a decent match here. Heath’s new direction as a vigilante character is very interesting to see, and I really like what they planned for him. Angels sold the wake-up call great at the end, hoping he gets involved back in the X-Division soon.

Result: Heath by Pinfall via. Wake-Up Call

Bailey Higham WR Star Rating – 2.75 Stars

In an interview with Gia Miller, Eric Young tells us that the world will see what truly happened, between him and Deaner. This is their attempt in covering up a murder, very weird storyline direction.

SQUASH: Jake Something vs Davey Vega

This is what you’d expect, the jobber gets cocky straight away, which leads to Jake Something eating him alive. Very fun squash match, there is money in Jake Something.

Result: Jake Something by Pinfall via. Into The Void

Moose, Myers & Bully congratulation Lio for his decision last week, but Lio is still cagey on the alliance. I’m liking this aspect to the story, adds something for the 8-Man tag at Emergence.

The usual Joe Hendry pre-match promo, is as entertaining as always. He is clearly frustrated at Yuya Uemura, for injecting himself in this match. Yuya then comes down with a mic and says “I’m Yuya Uemura…CHAMPION!”, in a parody of Hendry’s usual schtick, which I found pretty funny.

GOOD Yuya Uemura vs Kenny King vs Joe Hendry – Digital Media Championship

Yuya and Joe attempt to be friendly, but as triple threat matches are, that friendliness fades away. We get a memorable spot here, as Joe Hendry sings his theme, while slapping the other guys’ chests to the beat. Yuya is seemingly very over in the Impact Zone, as he gets frequent chants throughout the night. Yuya gets a big kickout out’ve a cutter from Joe Hendry, before being put down by a royal flush from King, in a finish that keeps everyone strong. Really fun match.

Result: Kenny King by Pinfall via. Royal Flush

Bailey Higham WR Star Rating – 3.25 Stars

In a backstage interview with Bailey & Gresham, Gresham once again complains about the lack of rules, and how he’s sick of people like the Rascalz cheating. This Gresham storyline is very interesting, and there’s quite a few ways it could play out (Grand Championship return potentially?).

Crazzy Steve attempts to talk to Death Dollz (who want to be involved in the knockouts tag title match), but they avoid him and say they’ll talk later. I hope this means the full return of DeCay. Death Dollz have really staled for me recently.

GOOD The Rascalz vs Jonathan Gresham and Mike Bailey

Great tag team action from four great workers. Gresham does well in showing his anger against the lack of rules, as he chases Trey Miguel, after being hit by him whilst he wasn’t the legal man. Bailey and Wentz revisit their animosity at one point in this matchc, as they have a great exchange, before Bailey is able to manage the hot tag. Unsurprisingly, the Rascalz win again using the spraypaint, in a predictable, but understandable finish.

Result: Trey Miguel by Pinfall via. Spray Paint

Bailey Higham WR Star Rating – 3.00 Stars

We then get the anticipated vignette of Eric Young managing to get himself back to life, after Deaner seemingly killed him all those months ago. He coughs up blood and rides on a motorcycle, while delivering an awesome monologue, reminding everyone that he’s not dead yet. This was genuinely one of the best segments I’ve seen from Impact Wrestling in a long time. I can not stress how great they are at their cinematic stuff, it makes them stand out more and they do it really well.

Overall…

Once again, Impact delivers a very enjoyable night of action. The opening segment, and tag match, were done very well. As much as I’m not a massive fan of how they’ve built towards the Trinity vs Deonna matches, the tag match was very good, and the opening promo was pretty enjoyable. As much as it’s unfortunate to see Angels lose, Heath’s potential push with his current character does intrigue me, and I don’t hate the idea of a Heath singles push. The Jake Something squash was great for a squash, and made me further see how much money is in Jake Something. The triple threat was also really fun, although I believe it’s time for every one of the men involved to move onto something new (although I wouldn’t mind more Yuya and Joe tag stuff). The main event was enjoyable, but nothing crazy great. The finish made sense obviously, with this furthering Gresham’s story of him wanting more rules in Impact (as the spray paint was vital in the finish). The main event was a piece of cinema, it was what Impact does best, and they need to do more of. EY came out’ve it looking like the coolest man alive, and now I’m insanely hyped for the rest of the Design feud.

Matches: 0.5/1 Stars

Show Structure: 0.5/1 Stars

In the last stop on the road to Slammiversary, we’re in for a great night of action, as Deonna Purrazzo puts out an open challenge for her Knockouts world championship. The Impact Zone will also get to see Yuya Uemura & Joe Hendry take on Kenny King & Sheldon Jean, as well as Sami Callihan & Rich Swann taking on Moose & Myers, as both teams are competitors in the tag title fatal four way tag match at Slammiversary.

GOOD Zachary Wentz vs Chris Bey

In his first match back in Impact, Zachary Wentz puts on a good opener against, one half of the tag team champions, Chris Bey. While you’d expect this to be a fast-paced X-Division opener, which it was partly, the two men also shown off some more well-rounded wrestling instead, which was quite enjoyable. Wentz wins with a nasty headlock DDT, which is LA Knight’s finisher for those unaware. Bey sells it incredible and made the move look very dangerous (something I wish people would do for LA Knight aswell). Trey Miguel distracted the referee, by attacking Ace Austin at ringside, which let Wentz cheat, to aid him for the win.

Result: Zachary Wentz by Pinfall via Headlock DDT

Bailey Higham WR Star Rating – 3.25 Stars

As the head backstage the Rascalz ask Director Of Authority, Santino Marella, for a tag title match, and Santino turns it down, which is followed by the Rascalz telling Santino that he’ll regret it. I really don’t want the Rascalz to be associated in the Santino/Dango storyline if that’s where they’re planning to go. I just feel like there’s better potential direction for them.

Very good video package to build towards Aldis vs Shelley, which I quite liked as I feel like the World title matches need hype like this, as these video packages make them feel like a big deal.

GREAT Mike Bailey vs Kevin Knight

The crowd were loud for this match, which you love to see. The crowd erupt when Speedball comes out, which is lovely to see. Really hope Speedball makes a main event push soon, he’s really gotten over, and he’s proven he can hang with the best. Speedball has proven that he cannot have a bad match, and he’s further proven it here, as he has a really entertaining, fast-paced match with Knight. This is the best build we’ve gotta to the Ultimate X match, and has really made me excited for it. Kevin Knight’s athleticism is crazy, and they really do a good job showing it off here (Knight hurricanrana’s Bailey off the second rope and it looks majestic). After some more, simply breathtaking, fast-paced action Mike Bailey gets the win with the Ultimo Weapon, in a match that shown how great Kevin Knight can be, and got me really hyped for the Ultimate X match.

Result: Mike Bailey by Pinfall via Ultimo Weapon

Bailey Higham WR Star Rating – 3.75 Stars

Masha Slamovich and Killer Kelly have a backstage video, where they challenge The Coven for the Knockouts Tag Titles, in a match I’m very excited for. They also wear the chains, which is a very good touch.

In Joe Hendry’s pre-match promo, he brings up the stripper Kenny video, and then follows it with his usual routine, before introducing Yuya Uemura.

AVERAGE Joe Hendry & Yuya Uemura vs Kenny King & Sheldon Jean

As King does his entrance, the crowd chant for him to take his jacket off, purposefully zipping it up all the way (he refuses to take it off due to the stripper accusations). The crowd continues to be great, as they constantly chant “Take it off” whenever Kenny is on the offensive. Hendry, being the lovable guy that he is eventually takes the jacket off King, and gets the crowd to chant “stripper Kenny” at him. King, feeling violated, runs to the back, leaving his protégé stranded, letting Hendry deliver the standing ovation for the win. Obviously not a great match by any means, but a fun crowd pleaser that planted the seeds for Jean betraying King.

Result: Joe Hendry by Pinfall via Standing Ovation

Bailey Higham WR Star Rating – 2.50 Stars

We get another promo package, with Lio Rush cutting a great promo, talking about how he’s not about the nostalgia and how he’s gonna dethrone Sabin for the prestigious X-Division Championship. Really like how he highlighted how prestigious the belt is. Adds to the importance of the match.

We then cut to a good backstage interview from Sabin, as he tells Lio that he is the final boss and he’s not gonna be dethroned at Slammiversary.

GREAT Moose & Brian Myers vs Rich Swann & Sami Callihan

This is a good tag match here. Fast paced action early on before they break, until we’re faced with a beatdown on Swann, which leads to a very inventive hot tag, where Swann jumps out’ve a roll up to get it. This match is great build for the fatal four way tag, as both teams take each other to the limit, with Swann & Callihan seemingly having it won twice. Moose has to resort to a low blow to help him get the win, which gives Moose & Myers some needed momentum for Saturday, as they needed to bounce back from the loss to ABC in Australia.

Results: Moose by Pinfall via Spear

Bailey Higham WR Star Rating – 3.50 Stars

We then get Subculture cutting a quick promo, further hyping up the fatal four tag, as they claim that they are gonna win the belts for all the different subcultures. Fine promo, doesn’t really add excitement for the fatal four way tag, but it was alright.

Alan Angels cuts a great promo about how he plans to spread his wings like an Angel would, and how he’s gonna make his mark at Slammiversary. Good build for the Ultimate X match, can’t wait to see Angels finally showcase more of his X-Division skills.

GREAT Deonna Purrazzo vs Jody Threat

On paper, this match is very interesting the champion, Deonna Purrazzo, against, the unbeaten, Jody Threat. Jody gets some great frenzy-like offence in, before Deonna puts a stop to it with a nasty arm breaker. Deonna, who is known for her great technical wrestling, adds a great element to the match, as she constantly targets the injured left arm of Jody Threat. I really liked Threat’s spurts of offence throughout the match, as her style is very entertaining when she’s an underdog trying to get back into the fight. Deonna locks in a nasty Fujiwara variation for the win, after a really good competitive match, that shown that Jody can hang with the top knockouts.

Result: Deonna Purrazzo by Submission

Bailey Higham WR Star Rating – 3.75 Stars

After the match, a massive, chaotic brawl ensues with all of the knockouts involved in storylines for Slammiversary. Near the end of the brawl, Trinity comes out to aid the faces. Deonna and Trinity do the both people holding the title spot, which leads to them finally fighting each other, giving the main event some much needed aggression.

A strong go-home show for Impact, with one of the best crowds they’ve had all year. Mike Bailey vs Kevin Knight and the main event really stole the show for me, and gave us a really solid night of in-ring action. With both the tag matches also being a lot of fun, and are definitely worth giving a watch for some enjoyable wrestling (King/Jean vs Yuya/Hendry being more comedy focused, while Sami/Swann vs Moose/Myers just having some good pro wrestling). All of the Slammiversary matches which I felt needed more/better build (Ultimate X, four way tag, Lio vs Sabin, Trinity vs Deonna), all got the build that was necessary for them and the storylines were well-progressed. Every match had a purpose, and nothing really felt out’ve place. This built the hype for Slammiversary now, and has left me very excited for Saturday.

On tonight’s episode of Impact Wrestling, we see Nick Aldis attempt to explain his actions, from when he attacked Alex Shelley. We also get to see the anticipated rubber match between Chris Sabin and Trey Miguel to open the show, for the X-Division Championship. This will also be accompanied by Trinity VS Jai Vidal, KiLynn King VS Masha Slamovich, we hear from Scott D’Amore, Lio Rush makes his Impact TV debut and Kenny King VS Yuya Uemura.

GREAT Chris Sabin vs Trey Miguel

The rubber match between these two, with their first two being really good encounters, the ambitions were high. They had a really fun tussling spot early on, where they test there strength’s against each other, with them falling out’ve the ring on the two occasions, while refusing to let go. After some fun early offence and some brawling at ringside, they head back into the ring, and Miguel seems to remain on top, until he ends up missing a beautiful lionsault. The offence of the match then picks up, with Sabin getting a near fall off of a superplex. We then hear “This is awesome” chants, as the crowd recognise how enjoyable of an opener this has been. Another highlight of Trey’s marvellous athleticism was the springboard hurricanrana from Trey that was just beautiful if I’m being honest. The two men go back and forth some more in the final stages of the match, before someone runs down and attacks Sabin causing a DQ. It’s ZACHARY WENTZ! The Rascalz are back, this is awesome if I’m being honest. While I was hoping Trey would head to the main event scene, I’m more than happy with him and Zachary in the tag division. Furthermore, this was a great match (which we have come to expect from these two in the ring together), but the DQ finish stops it from being anything more than a 3.5.

Result: Chris Sabin by Disqualification

Bailey Higham WR Star Rating – 3.50 Stars

As we come back from the break Trey Miguel re-introduces Wentz, and he explains how Miguel was abandoned, and how Wentz went through hell after he left. Really fiery promo, lots of passion here, really enjoyable.

SQUASH Trinity vs Jai Vidal

Trinity is, unsurprisingly, very over with the crowd, she gets a massive ovation from the Impact Zone when she enters. Trinity gets Jai with a lot of offence early on, but help from Evans & Shaw stop this from being a squash. After this short lived offence, the crowd erupts for everything Trinity does, which is simply lovely to see. While this wasn’t a complete squash, this wasn’t a completely competitive match. Deonna was on commentary, which doesn’t really build to the match as well as I’d like them to, but they’re still doing well.

Result: Trinity by Submission via Starstruck

Shaw and Savannah jump Trinity after the match, because they’ve been at odds with Trinity over the past couple of weeks. Deonna watches the assault intently at ringside, before then deciding to interfere, finally adding atleast some tension for the Slammiversary match.

We then go backstage, to where we Brian Myers and the Good Hands approach Moose, thanking him for assisting them in their victory over oVe last week. Moose tells Myers that he’s excited to be tag champs with him, but he needs to ditch the deadweight (The Good Hands). Myers then seemingly dumps the Good Hands with no second thought, in a segment that I found really stupid. Surely Moose would want the Good Hands accompanying him, as he’s team with him before, and he’d surely like the numbers advantage. This just made the Good Hands look like clowns, which is awful to see for a tag team of their skill.

SQUASH Lio Rush vs Jack Price

The Impact Zone stay rowdy for Rush’s entrance, as he gets a great pop. Rush starts the match off with a cheap shot, which is followed by some fast-paced action between Lio and Price. Lio obviously picks up the win on his TV debut, but Price (who I believe is signed) got a good platform, and got some glimmer of offence in.

Result: Lio Rush by Pinfall via the Final Hour

We then cut to a Dirty Dango promo, which is very weird to say nonetheless. He tells the story of how Santino got in the wrestling business (he constantly interrupts himself in the middle of saying things by the way, really weird promo style), then he insinuated that Santino’s daughter is only in the wrestling business because she’s been blackmailing people.

We then immediately cut to Santino responding to the video in a really passionate promo, where he claims that he will make Dango pay for the things that he’s said. Really good promo for what it was, we normally don’t see this side of Santino, so when we do see it, it really exaggerates the passion he feels.

Kazarian then questions what Eddie what about what his intentions were in the tag match last week. This leads to a back and forth between the two, and they end up coming to the agreement that they’re better as enemies than partners. Glad to see this continue, really enjoyed their first match, and would love to see a second at Slammiversary.

GOOD KiLynn King VS Masha Slamovich

Putting two of the hardest hitting knockouts in a match is bound to be entertaining. Some of the strike exchanges in this match were just chefs kiss, with one ending with Masha kicking King in the head, in brutal fashion. They continue this hard-hitting brawl, until Taylor Wilde interferes and assaults Masha when the referee isn’t looking. This cheating doesn’t last for long, as Killer Kelly then makes the save. Masha then hits the snowplough for the win.

Result: Masha Slamovich by Pinfall via the Snowplough

Bailey Higham WR Star Rating – 3.00 Stars

After the match, Kelly walks into the ring, chain wrapped around neck (nice storyline detail), Masha then stands across her, and wraps the chain around her neck. Masha & Kelly challenging for the Knockouts tag belts is perfect and the perfect direction for their storyline, I have no complaints at this, this is a really good booking decision.

We get a pre-taped promo about Scott D’Amore, reminiscing on his career. It shows the collection of the plethora of people he’s trained. I cannot stress this enough, that I am all for this Scott D’Amore sendoff match, as he is 1000% deserving of this for all he’s done for not only Impact, but wrestling in general.

We then get Gia Miller interviewing D’Amore about Darren McArthy being the special enforcer for Slammiversary. The Good Hands then interrupt, challenge D’Amore to a match, but end up in a handicap match against PCO. They instantly regret their decisions. Not a good day for the Good Hands.

GOOD Yuya Uemura VS Kenny King

This match flows pretty well, with King being the more dominant of the two, which is obvious as he’s more established and Yuya is seen as an underdog type character. The crowd are also firmly behind Yuya, which is nice to see, as they are loudly behind his comeback sequences. A good highlight of this match was when Yuya reversed King’s suplex into a DDT, in a really smooth transition. Uemura has endless potential, as he puts up a great effort, even in defeat to the Royal Flush.

Result: Kenny King by Pinfall via the Royal Flush

Bailey Higham WR Star Rating – 3.25 Stars

Joe Hendry then comes out, after being teased in the production truck earlier. It’s a good day, as we’re blessed with another Joe Hendry music video, this time in-which he exposes Kenny King for his past as a male stripper. This is highly worth checking out, because it is frankly hilarious.

GOOD Nick Aldis/Alex Shelley Promo

We get our first heel Aldis promo here. He lists his reasons for turning on Shelley, and they are somewhat valid, as Aldis believes that Shelley & Sabin are starting to believe in their own propaganda, and that they disrespected him in the tag match from a few weeks back. While I do think that Aldis sounded unnatural in this heel persona at times, it’s still solid promo work from him, and good build towards the Slammiversary match. Shelley (who is sat in the crowd due to Aldis wanting to Lee his distance from him) tells Aldis to shut the hell up, and the crowd eat it up. This leads to the two brawling, which is followed by Sabin making the save for Shelley, which is then followed by Lio Rush coming out and attacking Sabin. Really good decision here for Aldis & Rush to form an alliance, so we don’t just get repeated segments of “Oh Sabin made the save!”. Lio vs Sabin at Slammiversary is also a very good on paper, so no complaints there.

Bailey Higham WR Star Rating – 3.00 Stars

A strong episode this week from Impact Wrestling. The show starts off hot, with a very enjoyable match, that may have a flat finish, but ultimately is made up for by the return of Zachary Wentz. The wrestling doesn’t reach the heights of the opener, but we still get solid matches in KyLinn vs Masha and King vs Yuya. Storytelling-wise this show was good, most of the important storylines were progressed. No match felt out of place, as everything felt like it had a purpose. More seeds for Slammiversary have further been planted, and the event continues to look more promising as the weeks go on. My main gripe however, is how they’re building towards Triniry vs Purrazzo. The build has been really poor so far, as they’ve just been teaming up against the Shaw-ntourage, instead of building towards the actual big match at hand, which you think would be the focus. It’s crazy that the one segment we’ve got so far building the womens tag title match, has built that match more for me than they have for Trinity Vs Deonna. The crowd was more-or-less great at every corner of the show, so there’s not complaints about the Impact Zone this week. Aldis’ adaptation to his new persona was questionable in the main event, but knowing the guy’s incredible charisma, I’m sure that he will mellow into it.

Overall…

Matches: 0.5/1 Stars

Show Structure: 0.5/1 Stars

Atmosphere: 0.75/1 Stars

With the NWA Alwayz Ready pay-per-view ahead, Kamille reflects on her reign and the forbidden door.

The NWA Women’s World Champion Kamille spoke with WrestleZone about the last NWA PPV and her championship.

Related to the forbidden door, Kamille has been there before.

Kamille defended her title against All Elite Wrestling’s Leyla Hirsch at NWA Empowerrr last year, also appearing on AEW TV in the lead-up to the event.

During the podcast, she expressed why she likes the concept in small doses but she’d be open to a cross-promotional match down the line.

“So my thing with the forbidden door is I think it’s super cool when it’s used rarely. My thing with it was if you can see those matches happen every pay-per-view, then who cares? But if it’s something where it’s like a once-a-year type of deal, I think then it becomes something that’s really special and people will really look forward to. I’m not against it,” Kamille noted.

“I just think it needs to be used sparingly. And yeah, I would love to revisit that eventually, whether it be Thunder Rosa, Serena Deeb, I would love to face Jade Cargill over there. I think that’s a match that a lot of people are interested in seeing. So one day we’ll see what happens.”

In terms of Tasha Steelz, the Knockouts Champion had an appearance on the Battleground podcast.

Steelz said she would be open to squaring off with Kamille after Slammiversary.

After this, Kamille noted that she knows Tasha from her run with the NWA prior to the pandemic, but she’s open to seeing what happens in a winner takes all match.

Mickie James opens about the importance of females behind the ring.

As a guest on the “Battleground Podcast” this week, Mickie talks about agents behind the matches.

James compared having female and male agents, also sharing her thoughts on Tasha Steelz.

In comparing females and males as agents, Mickie said.

“My trainers were always men because there weren’t female trainers. There weren’t any female agents. There weren’t really women’s voices in those decision making rooms. So even what we were seeing on television was, and I don’t mean this in a bad way, but it was a male’s perspective of how a woman thinks, and it’s not accurate, especially not accurate in 2022,”

She continues, “There weren’t enough women who had the longevity and stuck around to be able to get behind the scenes to be in those positions to say, ‘No, this is actually how we think and how it would go.’ That has changed the game a lot. It’s so important to have people like that.”

She also praised Gail Kim for her work as an agent and producer for the women’s division at Impact Wrestling.

“What Gail (Kim) has been able to do with the Knockouts Division is incredible, and I think that is a testament to why it’s really the division that the women want to be in because of the opportunities that we get there, the stories that are being told, and to be seen as legitimate wrestlers.”

James as well shared her opinion on Tasha Steelz and her work as the current Impact Knockouts World Champion.

“She’s got tons of personality. She’s magic on the mic. This girl is a star. She’s solid in the ring, she has her own style, and she’s very charismatic. For me, she checks all the boxes. She really represents this new generation of women’s wrestling very well because she’s tough in the ring and she is tough as nails.” (Vía Battleground Podcast and h/t to WrestlingNews.co)

Impact Wrestling star- and former WWE Superstar-Mickie James has spoken recently on the ‘Throwing Down With Renee & Meisha’ podcast, where she discussed about some important issues surrounding her WWE release.

During the interview, James recalls having faced some serious self-confidence issues after being released from the WWE in April 2021. She also stated that, at some point, she was thinking seriously about whether to wrestle ever again.

“Honestly, I wasn’t even considering whether I wanted to wrestle after I left. It was more about raising the awareness for women’s wrestling. Everything else was kind of icing on the cake.

Now I’m sitting in a different seat and more in my own power of trying to figure out what works for me and what I want to do. I lost my confidence. It’s surprising for me to say that, but I feel like towards the end (of WWE), I had a lack of confidence in myself and who I was as a performer, almost like I forgot all this other cool stuff I did and how much it meant to a lot of people.”

The former 5-time WWE Women’s Champion and Impact World Knockouts Champion also explained how she thinks that, after leaving Vince McMahon’s company, she had the chance to do other kind of stuff and was able to give some of the best matches of her entire career.

“To be able to go away, even the way that I did, and then do all of this stuff, it’s been wild. I’ve had some of my best matches of my career,” she concluded.

Taya Valkyrie has returned to Impact Wrestling.

The former Impact Knockouts Champion confronted ROH Women’s World Champion and AAA Reina de Reinas Champion Deonna Purrazzo following Purrazzo’s match at Friday’s Multiverse of Matches event at Wrestlecon. She issued a challenge for the AAA Reina de Reinas title at Impact’s Saturday, April 23, Rebellion event.

Purrazzo retained the AAA Reina de Reinas title at Multiverse of Matches, defeating Faby Apache. As she was addressing ROH crowning an interim Women’s World Champion in Mercedes Martinez, Valkyrie made her surprise return.

Valkyrie spent more than three years with Impact until leaving in January 2021. She signed with WWE NXT in February of last year, debuting as Franky Monet. She was released by WWE this past November. Valkyrie has the longest Knockouts World Title reign in Impact history at 377 days for her first and only run with the title, which went from January 6, 2019, until January 18, 2020.

Featured Photo Credit – Impact

Mickie James is a pioneer in Women’s wrestling and has had a trailblazing career and continues to defy all barriers put in front of her. When WWE talks about pioneering women that led to the women’s revolution in the industry, they tend to always name the same two – Trish Stratus and Lita and don’t get me wrong those are two of the biggest, but they had a lot of dancing partners during their time in the business. Victoria, Jacqueline, Ivory, Jazz and the one that is still in the game in Mickie James. Every woman that has ever stepped foot in the wrestling business has had an impact on the women’s revolution of today and to diminish their accomplishments and say well it was just Trish, Lita, Charlotte, Sasha and Becky is really an injustice. It is not just the women I stated above that helped change the business, you can look at Madusa, Luna, Chyna, Beth Phoenix, Natalya, Gail Kim, Awesome Kong and the list can go on and on of women that helped changed the business.

Mickie James has always had the drive for more in this business as she continued to strive for equality in the business. Mickie is one of the most decorated champions of all time, holding 10 Women’s Championships between WWE (6) and TNA/Impact (4) for a combined 872 days (that number will continue to go up as she is the reigning Knockouts champion as of this writing). She is one of the most respected veterans in the business today among the men and women in this industry. Mickie has been in the ring with almost every woman that is a major star in the business for the past 20 years and she continues going while so many of her peers have retired.

Mickie has truly done it all in the wrestling business, she has had legendary rivalries with Trish, Gail Kim, Melina, Michelle McCool, Beth Phoenix, Madison Rayne, Victoria and the list can go on because like I said she has wrestled almost every major star over the past 20 years. Mickie started her career in 1999 and began her career on the independents and caught the eye of upstart promotion TNA in 2002 and while there she was the first and to this day the only woman to compete in a Clockwork Orange House of Fun match.

She caught the eye of WWE who signed her and sent her to OVW in 2003 and brought her to the main roster in 2005 and was paired with Trish as an obsessed fan that would have romantic feelings for Trish. Despite being saddled with this storyline, Mickie let her work in ring to speak for itself and no one would be talking about lesbian angle for long. Mickie would have a solid 5-year run in the company where she would hold the WWE Women’s Championship 5-times and the WWE Diva’s Championship once and put on the best matches she could with whoever she was in the ring with regardless of their skill level, including wrestling in the first ever women’s falls count anywhere match with Melina. As the company began changing direction of their women’s division from capable wrestlers to just models that may or not know how to wrestle or have a passion for the business, Mickie was let go as she didn’t fit their mold for the direction they were going.

This did not deter Mickie, she already had a potential HOF career at this point, but she knew she could do so much more. She rejoined the independents and TNA in 2011. TNA at this time was fully embracing a women’s revolution of their own with Gail Kim and Awesome Kong as the cornerstones of a roster that would blow the WWE’s own women’s division out of the water at this time. Mickie wasted no time in making history by winning the TNA Knockouts Championship becoming the first woman to ever hold the WWE Womens, WWE Divas and TNA Knockout Championships in their career. Mickie would continue to put on the best matches she could and there is no question no matter who she was in the ring with learned something from Mickie and were better performers after being in the ring with her. She would wrestle for TNA/Impact for about 5 years before WWE came calling for her to return for a match.

Triple H wanted to bring Mickie into NXT to wrestle the dominate Asuka for the NXT Women’s Championship and although the plan may have been just for a one-off night return, Mickie and Asuka tore it up in ring and WWE immediately signed her to a multi-year contract. She would have a whole new roster of talent to wrestle, and she was about to get to see the equality that she had been pushing to happen for years as she would wrestle in the first ever women’s Royal Rumble match and the first ever women’s Elimination Chamber about a year after rejoining the company. Followed by the first ever Women’s Wrestlemania Battle Royal and the biggest the first ever women’s only WWE PPV, Evolution. Mickie would play the veteran role but was not used to her full potential during this second run with the company that would end controversially by not only being released in 2021 but having her stuff sent to her in a trash bag.

Now this would be incredibly disrespectful for this to happen to any performer but to do this to a bonafide legend and future HOFamer, this is SO MUCH WORSE. When she publicly told the world what happened, fans and peers were furious and other former talent said the same happened to them. Stephanie McMahon publicly apologized and the person responsible was fired. Mickie has said Stephanie, Triple H and Vince personally called her to apologize.

Mickie was ready to make history in the business outside of WWE again, she would join the NWA and re-join Impact. Working with Billy Corgan in the NWA, she told him of a passion project she wanted to do, which was another Women’s only PPV. She tried to get WWE to do another Evolution PPV but was told “it is a money loser and women don’t draw”. Corgan liked the idea and Mickie executive produced NWA Empowerrr, using the talent from the NWA, Impact and AEW.

In Impact, Mickie would begin to feud with one of the best women’s wrestlers in the world, Deonna Purrazzo, who was the dominate Impact Knockouts champion. Mickie would dethrone Deonna and she was scheduled to defend the title at Hard to Kill. When the wrestling world was completely blown away that WWE and Impact publicly announced for the FIRST TIME EVER not only a contracted wrestler from another promotion, but a champion would compete in the Royal Rumble, as Mickie James would return to the WWE.

At Hard to Kill, Mickie successfully defended the Knockouts Championship in a grueling Texas Deathmatch against Deonna and the last words from the announcer was the Knockouts champion Mickie James path is cleared to enter the Royal Rumble as champion. Even typing that now after the Rumble it is still surreal. WWE has never been the promotion that likes to play with others and was never one you’d expect would be willing to open the “forbidden door”, now this could just be a one-off but it is still a huge deal especially they publicly acknowledged her as Impact Knockouts champion.

Mickie addressed the world on the Impact before the Rumble announcing her goal to not only win the Rumble but to do a title for title at Wrestlemania. Honestly, she didn’t even have to win the Rumble for this to happen, they could have had her eliminate Charlotte from the Rumble, which would have shocked the world that the Impact Knockouts champion eliminated the Smackdown Women’s champ. Then you could have had Charlotte attack Mickie at an Impact show setting up the Wrestlemania match. To me this would have been shocking and having a title for title match would have been amazing for Mania. Let’s say Charlotte won, you could have then had her claiming to be Charlotte 2 belts, which would be a dig at her bitter rival, Becky and we could have seen Charlotte vs Deonna, who also has two belts in the AAA and ROH Women’s titles. There were a lot of possibilities for this to play out if WWE was willing to truly embrace the door because Impact would have likely been willing to play ball for this and so would AAA and ROH if they would have gotten Charlotte, in a winner take all scenario. As far as losing the titles. she could have easily lost them in multi-person matches without being pinned, which would protect her. They could have also gone the draw route without titles changing hands setting up a potential rematch down the road.

Anyway, back to the focus of the article, Mickie and Impact truly played this up as the big deal that it truly is and as a fan the unbelievable thought of WWE not only having a wrestler from another company in the Rumble but the fact that person is the champion of that company is really incredible. I give credit to both WWE and Impact for putting egos aside and making this happen. Impact released a video with talents voicing their opinions on Mickie being in the Rumble and posted the following image in support of Mickie.

Now prior to the Rumble, Mickie was asked if she would be coming out to her Impact theme, Hardcore Country, and would she be wearing the Knockouts title to the ring at the Rumble and her response that she “hoped so”. Now as a fan, I have said this before I am a big supporter of this as it makes this person a big deal to your audience, and it is free publicity for the promotion they are representing but knowing WWE I wasn’t sure if they would be willing to do it. I couldn’t wait for Mickie’s entrance to see which way it would go, and I was very happy the moment I heard Hardcore Country hit because I knew they did the right thing:

It was a great moment for Mickie to get at least one more chance in a WWE ring and for her to proudly represent Impact and the women of Impact was an unbelievable moment as she walked down to the ring holding that title proudly and the announcers acknowledging her as the Impact champion. I’m a little surprised they didn’t use the word “knockouts” on the name plate since they used it on the tweet when she was announced for the match but that is minor. Unlike so many other returning legends in the Rumble she lasted 11:40, while entering at number 20 and eliminated fellow legend, Michelle McCool. Mickie was eliminated by her former rival and HOFamer, Lita.

Post-match, Mickie acknowledged she would have loved to have won but she was proud of what she was able to do out there. Mickie was able to rewrite her last moment in WWE at least for now so that the last moment wasn’t trashbaggate. Mickie deserved this moment and the fact that WWE not only was willing to not only correct the disrespect that she was shown but to give Impact recognition in the process was classy.

Final Thoughts:

Personally, I don’t think this is the last we see Mickie James on WWE TV in 2022 as I truly think she will be inducted into the WWE HOF this year. She has had a HOF resume for years and she just continues to build on it. When all is said and done for her career, Mickie will be in multiple HOFs including WWE and Impact and it will be well deserved. She is one of the most respected competitors to ever step foot in that ring regardless of gender and is beloved by the fans and her peers.
