In the build-up to Charlotte Flair’s match with Raw Women’s Champion Becky Lynch at Survivor Series, the news of the second-generation stars backstage heat took headlines and made the angle a personal one. For those who don’t know, this information first came to light after the awkward title exchange last month between the two champions. The segment saw Becky try and take the red belt off her rival, only for Charlotte to drop it on the ground, an unscripted act that would lead to a tense altercation backstage. News soon followed that there had been real animosity towards the SmackDown Women’s Champion for some time now due to her being difficult to work with, as described by her coworkers.
First, we heard Becky’s response to the claims, for which she confirmed the reports on the SI Media Podcast, stating: “I don’t know, man. We don’t talk anymore. We don’t talk. So, all I’ll say is the locker room needs a hero sometimes. And sometimes somebody’s gotta be a hero. I’m alright being that hero. That’s what I’ll say on the matter.” (H/T TJRWrestlingNews.net)
Now, almost a week later, we have Charlotte’s perspective on the claims, stating in an interview with BT Sport: “It obviously rubs people the wrong way, but if I was a man would it rub people the wrong way? What? ‘Charlotte’s difficult’ why? Because I stand up for what I believe in? that makes me difficult? But if I were a man, I would have big balls, right? No. I know how good I am. Man or woman, I’m the best.” (H/T Wrestlinginc.com)
The internet quickly jumped on the Queen’s comments made just six days out from her champion vs. champion match with Becky Lynch. The Man herself soon caught wind of these words from her adversary and responded via Twitter, saying: “No one on our roster acts like this, man or woman. Gender ain’t the issue here.”
It’s unclear if their match on Sunday will be the end to their current on-screen rivalry, but with information of their real beef taking center stage, this angle has been more intense than any of their past encounters. Charlotte has even gone so far as to indirectly reference the issue and Becky’s comments on the November 12 edition of SmackDown. So could this Sunday be the culmination of their feud? It wouldn’t be the first time those in charge made a prolonged program to cash in on backstage drama.
