Aaliah Mysterio and Rhea Ripley had a confrontation on Raw, so now Buddy Matthews wants his girlfriend and ex to fight.
In the first Raw of the post-Vince McMahon era, the show celebrated the 20th anniversary of Rey Mysterio’s career. The celebration went on throughout the night with a party being held backstage in the veteran’s honor.
The festivities started with Rey and Dominik getting a win over Finn Balor and Damien Preist of Judgement Day. Unhappy with the result of their match, the duo dispatched Rhea Ripley to Rey’s party to stir up trouble.
The heel arrived in a classic Eddie Gurrerro shirt, which reads “I’m Your Papi” before the party guests. The former Raw Women’s champion’s attempt to cause a scene was countered by Aaliyah, Rey’s daughter.
Fans on social media were not lost on the confrontation’s significance as they immediately began talking about the segment. For those who don’t remember, Aaliyah was once involved in a romantic angle with Rhea’s current boyfriend Buddy Matthews (Murphy).
Matthews was with Seth Rollins as his disciple while he spent most of 2020 feuding with the Mysterio’s. Aaliyah eventually got involved with Murphy coming to her aid before the two formed a kayfabe relationship.
Fast forward, and Murphy would be terminated as part of WWE’s “budget cut” releases along with many other shocking names. He’s currently in AEW as part of the House of Black stable with Malakai Black, Brody King, and Julia Hart.
Despite not being in the same company, Ripley and Matthews were reported to be dating a couple of months ago. Matthews got in on the fun on Twitter saying, “I’ll let them fight for my custody in a ladder match!”
This references the infamous match between Rey and Eddie Guerrero where they fought for custody of Dominik in a ladder match. Triple H, who’s now in charge of creative, likely saw the connection between the women and knew fans would too.
For now, the Mysterios will continue to feud with Judgement Day, although it’s unclear if Aaliyah’s involvement will continue. Buddy Matthews, on the other hand, may compete for championship gold soon with House of Black.
Last night on Dynamite the Trios Tag Team Championships were introduced months after Tony Khan had had the belts made. A tournament will crown AEW’s first trio’s tag champions, and House of Black will more than likely be involved.
