From night two, he discussed his best friend Sami Zayn’s match with Johnny Knoxville and how delighted he was to see it live. He also stated that he got emotional at seeing his friend’s hard work pay off.

“This is going to sound corny but when Wee-Man came out from under the ring and started beating the sh** out of Sami, I got emotional at the reaction. It was so good. People were so happy, and I know how hard he worked for all of that. He had to fight to get it on the show and then he had to fight to make it good. Johnny Knoxville is amazing, Wee-Man, all those guys were incredible but they’re not wrestlers. He worked so hard to make that happen, he got body-slammed by Wee-Man, how did that happen?”

In discussing celebrity involvement at WrestleMania, Owens had nothing but kind words for any other outside stars looking to get in on the fun. He even dropped a big name he would like to face in the ring.

“I’ve always welcomed people from the outside in if they’re cool. Some of them aren’t cool and as far as I’m concerned, those guys can just go back from where they came from, we don’t need you. I did interviews before WrestleMania and people were asking me ‘if you could pick a celebrity to have a match with like Sami’s doing this weekend, who would it be? A few years ago, Matthew McConaughey came to a show, and he was backstage. I didn’t get to meet him because there was a lineup of people waiting to talk to him, so I didn’t get to see him.

“I remember not long after that he talked about how he’d love to do something in WWE. I don’t know him. I don’t know him at all but to me, he seems like the kind of guy who would be coming in to do it right and have a blast. People like that to me are welcome in our industry any time.”

“If we’re speaking things into existence, WrestleMania 39, come at me McConaughey, I’m gonna f*** you up.” (H/T WrestlingInc.com)

Owens is currently working a program with Ezikial (Elias) on Raw, while Sami is feuding with Drew McIntyre on SmackDown. After having two of the best matches at WrestleMania, it will certainly be interesting to see how their current storylines play out.

Sami used his official Twitter account to state that he’s actually proud of his match at WrestleMania and that he pairs it up with other great matches that he had, as well as saying that everyone that saw their fight will have a hard-time in trying to forget it.

My Wrestlemania match against Johnny Knoxville is one of my all time favorites. Definitely one of the matches I’m most proud of.
I’ve had a lot of great matches in my career, I’d put this up with any of them.
Anyone who saw this match will remember it. That’s as good as it gets.

— Sami Zayn (@SamiZayn) April 7, 2022

The truth is that the match between Zayn and Knoxville actually became a really fun match to watch, featuring some funny moments between Sami and the rest of the Jackass Forever crew. In the end, Knoxville would defeat Zayn via pinfall, while he was trapped in a giant mousetrap

This match with Knoxville was Sami’s sixth appearance at The Showcase Of The Immortals since he signed with WWE back in 2013, and debuted on the main roster back in mid 2016. During all this time, he managed to become a 3-time Intercontinental Champion and NXT Champion, as well as having interesting rivalries with Kevin Owens, Daniel Bryan (now known as Bryan Danielson) and Braun Strowman, to name a few.

The post Sami Zayn Says Match With Johnny Knoxville Was One Of His Favourite Matches appeared first on Wrestling Republic.

Sami Zayn is someone that I knew instantly the first time I saw him face Cesaro in NXT, that this guy is special. It made me look into his pre-WWE run matches, which made me an even bigger fan of him. For years, Sami was underrated and underutilized despite how much the fans cheered for the “Underdog from the Underground”. At one time, he was the heart and soul of the Black and Gold brand as the ultimate babyface. Outside of his feuds with Kevin Owens over the years in NXT/WWE reigniting his ROH/PWG feud with his best friend outside of the ring, Sami’s WWE run was less than encouraging to Sami or his fans. As Sami was frequently used to get others over, which is certainly one of his many skills making his opponents look good in the ring.

From his days on the independents as the masked luchadore, El Generico to his NXT/WWE run as the unmasked Sami Zayn, he spent from 2002 to 2017, as the consummate babyface. It appeared that Sami would be a babyface his whole career, like HOFamer, Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat. However, in 2017, he would turn heel teaming with his longtime rival and real-life friend, Kevin Owens. The two are former ROH Tag Team Champions together, but hadn’t tagged since Owens turned on him in 2009 setting off one of the greatest rivalries in wrestling history.

It was during this time as a heel from 2017-2019, that Sami is convinced made WWE management in particular, Vince McMahon, began viewing him in a new light as someone that could be special and not just a good hand to get others over. As Zayn, detailed in an interview:

“You never know which segment is going to open their eyes. I think I was already doing pretty good work in the ring and had established myself as more than competent in the ring and holding my own on the microphone as a good guy, and especially, doing really good work as a bad guy. But then there was one day where I was a guest referee for Kevin [Owens] vs. Seth [Rollins]. I was just doing me. When I got back, they were all doubled over. That’s what I think that inspired the idea for me to be a mouthpiece for Shinsuke [Nakamura]. I came back and Vince is like, ‘You have the gift of gab.’ I wasn’t even cutting a promo, I was just being a ref, but they just started seeing me in a new light of, ‘This guy, he can be so much. He can do so much for other people.’ I think they saw a broader vision for me in that moment. Someone who can be a manager even 10-15 years down the road. They just started seeing me in that different light. There was a new trust.

I’m one of the luckier guys. It took a while for my ideas to start getting through.  Sometimes they just don’t get through. I just started getting lucky out of nowhere and because stuff was working and I had a good relationship with writers, I’m very lucky. I can’t complain as much as other guys when it comes to pitching things and getting them. I have gotten away with a lot more than most, so I don’t think I’m in a position to complain about that.”

It is often said the best way to connect to the audience is if the audience believes the character that you are presenting is one that you are fully committed to and the closer that character is to your real personality the better. I believe it was Stone Cold that used to say the Texas Rattlesnake character was his real personality but dialed up to 11. The same could said about a lot of the legends of the past and top stars of today. In Sami’s case he is not playing the standard bad guy heel, but instead someone that believes everyone is out to get him in a massive conspiracy, complains a lot and makes constant excuses making him annoying. Being annoying is actually something Sami himself has been accused of according to Sami himself in this interview. Sami states in the interview”

“WWE made me aware of some of my own actions,” Sami said. “I came in and the big mantra was perception is reality. Even though I was 28 when I got there, I don’t think I was a fully mature person in some ways.

“I don’t think I was fully aware of…I had my interpretation of what I thought I was but then there was, ‘oh wait people who didn’t agree with that assessment,'” he continued.

“I see myself one way and other people are seeing me in a very different way and it was astounding a little bit because it made me a lot more aware of how my actions are perceived by people who are not me.”

As Sami took his own “annoying” personality traits, he decided to use his newfound knowledge to curate an annoying heel and dialed it up to 11. Vince McMahon liked what he was seeing from Sami and as he himself is arguably the greatest heel character of all time, decided to offer Sami some advice. As Sami detailed in this interview it seems like such a minor thing, but it paid off:

“My interactions with Vince have been a little more limited because I haven’t been in as many prominent storylines. Now, this is something that I feel like he has sunk his teeth into…He didn’t even get into detail. Some of it he would just say smile out there. I’m like really? Smile?…But if you are smiling, it is so much more obnoxious and so much more dislikeable. It is such a simple thing.”

As Sami’s heel run was catching on as the heel the fans loved to boo, he became more prominently featured on WWE TV and PPV including IC title reigns. Sami has proven over the last 9 years as part of the WWE and his overall 20-year career, he is reliable, safe performer that knows how to get himself and his opponents over regardless as a face or a heel. Sami is truly one of the all-time great performers of the modern era and one of the best ever. So, trusting Sami with a high-profile celebrity match at WWE’s biggest show of the year seems like a logical safe choice for the company.

The publicity will be great for the company and help get Sami’s name out there to a wider audience that may not follow wrestling but are fans of Johnny Knoxville. The build for this match started when Knoxville announced he was entering the Royal Rumble match in January. I’ll admit I was one of the fans that went…Really? Why? That is a slot a deserving wrestler could have had but knowing now what it was setting up it was a smart move by WWE. As Sami eliminated Knoxville from the Rumble, it was not the end of the feud that started leading into the Rumble with Knoxville and Sami trading jabs on the mic leading into the show.

Post Rumble, Sami would regain the IC Championship, but this would be a very short-lived run as Knoxville would continue to be a pest to Sami including helping Ricochet take the IC title from Sami. This was the final stray for Sami who demanded to face Knoxville at Wrestlemania, which Johnny quickly accepted showing that he doesn’t fear Sami, after all the things Johnny did to himself or had done to him on Jackass, he doesn’t fear bodily harm. Sami in attempt to prank the king of pranks, began to text and stalk the reality tv star including showing up and being thrown out of the Jackass movie premiere.

Knoxville was not entertained by this amateur prankster, so in the ultimate revenge he had a plane fly over LA with a banner instructing fans to text and call Sami Zayn’s cell number, which was covered by TMZ. I’m sure this is a WWE provided phone for Sami to use as a part of this angle but the engagement that it is getting is absolutely tremendous for Sami and WWE leading into Wrestlemania. The amounts of calls and texts is just insane, and Sami is playing the man being harassed and losing his mind to absolute perfection.

From fans sending multiple texts, calling him and facetiming him repeatedly, shows that fans are having a lot of fun playing along with this prank. It is clear that Sami is too by responding while in his tub to a facetime or sharing that his number was written in a bathroom stall and posting about it on social media. Sami is being driven to madness and Sami is becoming more and more unhinged. Deep down we know Sami is loving how well this is all going and I’m sure WWE is as well. This prank was a tremendous move to garner fan interest and participation in an angle like never before leading into Wrestlemania and Sami was the perfect person and character to make this both fun and entertaining for everyone involved. I for one am looking forward to seeing what these guys are able to pull off at the show, I don’t expect a 5-star classic, but it is not intended to be. It is intended to be a fun and entertaining match and garner huge publicity. Knowing Sami’s history he will likely be able to carry Knoxville to an entertaining match.

The post Honestly: Sami Zayn Is Making His Johnny Knoxville Feud Fun & Entertaining appeared first on Wrestling Republic.

Ricochet challenged Sami Zayn to a match for the IC Title last week. This was Sami’s first title defense of the Intercontinental title.

Tonight’s edition of Friday Night SmackDown on FOX opened up with Ricochet winning the Intercontinental title from Sami Zayn. However, the finish saw Jackass star Johnny Knoxville distract Zayn, allowing Ricochet to pin Zayn for the win.

This is Ricochet’s first run with the Intercontinental Title. Sami won the IC title back on the February 11 SmackDown by defeating Shinsuke Nakamura. He held the title for 13 recognized days.

WrestleMania is no stranger to having celebrities appear at the show. Celebrities & athletes alike such as Mike Tyson, Rob Gronkowski, Pamela Anderson, Muhammad Ali have all made appearances at the PPV with Boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr. former NFL linebacker Lawrence Taylor (who main evented WrestleMania XI against Bam Bam Bigelow) even competing at the event. Last year musician Bad Bunny was the latest in the line of celebrities to compete in the ring in a match where he earned solid praise for his wrestling skills. So, it comes as no surprise that there is now speculation that Johnny Knoxville is set compete at this year’s WrestleMania.

On his recent Wrestling Observer Radio show, Dave Meltzer has said WWE will bring in Johnny Knoxville for a shot at the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 38.

Johnny Knoxville has been making appearances in the WWE recently promoting his latest film Jackass Forever whilst also feuding with Sami Zayn on SmackDown. Johnny Knoxville already competed in the WWE last month, Knoxville appeared at the Royal Rumble PPV where he took part as one of the participants in the Rumble match itself entering at Number 9 before he was eliminated by Sami Zayn.

Spoiler Warning ahead:

WWE taped this week’s episode of SmackDown due to travel commitments for the upcoming Elimination Chamber PPV set to take place in Saudi Arabia. At the SmackDown taping Sami Zayn beat Shinsuke Nakamura for the Intercontinental Championship. Although nothing has been confirmed at this point the title win for Sami may suggest his feud with Johnny Knoxville will continue for a little while longer with a potential match at WrestleMania for the Intercontinental Championship between the two being touted.

The post WWE Planning To Give Johnny Knoxville An IC Title Opportunity At WrestleMania appeared first on Wrestling Republic.

John’s out for the night! I’ll be doing Smackdown tonight.

Preview: 8 Days before the Royal Rumble Premium Live Event, we see Charlotte Flair Vs Naomi in a Championship Contenders Match, We continue to see Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns building their next match in their historic rivalry. How does Seth Rollins react after being attacked by the Usos on Monday Night Raw? All that and Much More as we inch closer and closer to the Royal Rumble.

Great: Opening Promo, Usos, Seth, Roman, and Kevin Owens.

Overall this was well done, we saw The Usos introduce Roman well, and Roman had a great video package summarizing Roman’s historic Universal Championship title reign. Seth continues to bring up and allow the importance of their past together proving relevance in their short program. Kevin Owens had a great pop as he was Seth’s chosen partner.

The Main Event is official, Seth Rollins and Kevin Owens vs The Usos. If Seth and Kevin Owens win the Usos are banned from ringside at the Rumble, If The Usos win, Seth loses the title opportunity at the Rumble.

Match 1:

GOOD: Kofi Kingston with Big E Vs Madcap Moss with Happy Corbin

This match was better and more enjoyable than last week. Big E coming out was fun for Kofi and cool to even the odds. I know we are probably going to get another couple of rematches as they are 1 to 1. Madcap Moss continues to impress me, he is a big guy who is getting put in a mid card position and is doing pretty well in my opinion. Solid future mid-card champion. Kofi also is a solid choice to get a decent match out of someone.

Results: Kofi Kingston Pins Madcap after a Trouble In Paradise

Coby Galenzoski WR Star Rating – 3.25 Stars

Match 2:

SATISFACTORY: Aliyah Vs Natalya (Plus post-match segment)

Overall I liked the Hurricanrana that Aliyah did and then right into the discus clothesline. Outside of that this match was easily skippable and could have just been a brawl between the two. Xia Li returns and goes after Natalya, cool that they are trying to build both Aliyah and Xia up. I don’t enjoy that Xia is making this save and it’s just Natalya standing there because Xia Li has to do her entrance. It’s cool for the special effects but it’s not for the two cases they have used Xia in.

Results: Aliyah Wins by DQ after Natalya wouldn’t stop attacking her in the corner.

Coby Galenzoski WR Star Rating – 2.25 Stars

Match 3:

AVERAGE: Los Lotharios Vs Viking Raiders

Overall this was a short but sweet match. It was almost a high octane offense as they were told they had a short time slot. Fun combinations between both teams. Viking Raiders continue to pick up momentum as they are next for the Usos.

Results: Viking Raiders win after the Viking Experience pop-up power slam.

Coby Galenzoski WR Star Rating – 2.50 Stars

Match 4:

SATISFACTORY: Charlotte Flair Vs Naomi – Special Referee Sonya Deville.

Overall this match was short and just boring. There was an unneeded screw job on a random Smackdown after a few-minute match. The crowd was pretty dead as well. Sonya getting knocked out of the ring was a little interesting but overall this was the third match that just happened.

Results:

Coby Galenzoski WR Star Rating – 2.25 Stars

GOOD: Sami Zayn’s INZAYN Self Defense Segment.

Overall you could tell the sound effects were played from production but that was the point. Johnny Knoxville was alright on the mic and was extremely over. The crowd investment was the main reason this deserves a good. Johnny throws Sami Zayn over the top rope once again after using the cattle prod on Sami.

Next Week – Sonya Deville Vs Naomi is announced after Eric Bischoff and Adam Pearce are discussing business.

Match 5:

AVERAGE: Sheamus with Ridge Holland Vs Ricochet

Another short match that had a nice OMG moment with the catching Knee after the suicide dive. Sheamus continues to look good and strong but Ricochet taking losses isn’t that good.

Results: Sheamus wins after a Brogue Kick

Coby Galenzoski WR Star Rating – 2.50 Stars

Next Week – New Day Vs Madcap Moss and Happy Corbin

Match 6:

GOOD: Seth Rollins and Kevin Owens vs The Usos. If Seth and Kevin Owens win the Usos are banned from ringside at the Rumble, If The Usos win, Seth loses the title opportunity at the Rumble.

Overall this match built up to the second half of the match where the crowd was in the palm of the guys hands. Nice suicide dive by Rollins as well. The high octane second half was very good and enjoyable, but the abrupt ending with Roman attacking Rollins makes for a confusing ending.

Results: Seth Rollins gets Superman Punched causing a DQ and The Usos are barred from ringside for Roman Vs Seth.

Coby Galenzoski WR Star Rating – 3.50 Stars

Overall Smackdown had a number of short matches, with alright promos. This show seemed to be more in-ring-focused without having good quality matches. Tonight truly was carried by the opening promo, In-Zayn with Johnny Knoxville, and the main event. Going into next week will bring a little bit of interest with Sonya Vs Naomi and the New Day reuniting again as according to Michael Cole, It’s Royal Rumble Season and anyone can show up!

Show theme and presentation: 7/10

Watchability: 7/10

Production: 7/10

Storyline progression: 8/10

Crowd reaction: 8/10

Overall Rating. 6.8/10

The post “What a Main Event” Friday Night Smackdown Review 01/21/22 appeared first on Wrestling Republic.

John’s out for the night! I’ll be doing Smackdown tonight.

Preview: After Roman Reigns had announced that he was unable to compete, WWE called an audible giving Brock Lesnar the WWE Championship at the Day 1 Premium Live Event. After Bobby Lashley won the number one contendership for the Royal Rumble, Brock Lesnar was unfazed and said he would see Roman on Friday. With Paul Heyman back in Brock’s corner, this storyline continued to heat up. Outside of the Universal title picture, we will see if The Usos and New Day finish off their rivalry with a main event street fight. Will Sami Zayn Vs Shinsuke Nakamura happen after being mysteriously pulled from Day 1? And What is next for Happy Corbin and Madcap Moss as Drew was apparently written off Television. Let’s hope Smackdown starts off the year right.

GOOD: Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns and Paul Heyman open the show.

Roman Reigns opens the show entering and stating he doesn’t want to see Brock or Paul ever again and Brock’s theme hits. Brock continues to poke fun at Roman Reigns saying his lines, Roman calls Paul Heyman trash and the bantering continues with Brock turning to talk to Heyman, Roman Superman punches Brock and walks out.

Overall this promo worked out as a good promo, but I think there is a little confusion with Roman defending Paul, and Paul defending Roman still. Nothing too spectacular with this promo but it did its job having Roman stand tall as it’s becoming a stronger idea that they still want and aim to do Brock Vs Roman at Wrestlemania.

GOOD: Sami Zayn Interview and Johnny Knoxville Appearance

Sami uses the match being pulled as a way to claim Shinsuke is “ducking” him. Before seeing Johnny Knoxville further down the hallway. Sami disrespects Knoxville claiming he doesn’t have the skill and the qualifications to be in the Royal Rumble before going to do his entrance.

It’s somewhat good that they are making Johnny Knoxville in the Rumble as a story and not just some pointless cameo in the match itself. Hopefully, he can have a fraction of the success Bad Bunny had last year.

Match 1:

GOOD: Sami Zayn Vs Rick Boogs With Shinsuke Nakamura

Match starts off with Rick getting some offense before going to commercial break where Boogs was still ragdolling him around once they came back. Boogs was made to look very good and as Sami Zayn was taunting Shinsuke, Boogs took advantage for the victory.

This match was getting good with the crowd getting into it. Overall the match being shorter hinders the rating, but matches on WWE TV are always very limited.

Results: Rick Boogs pins Sami Zayn via a roll-up.

Coby Galenzoski WR Star Rating – 3.25 Stars.

After the match, Knoxville threw Sami over the top rope to qualify officially for the Royal Rumble.

RKBro Vs Alpha Academy is announced for Raw as a tag team title match between Charlotte’s entrance and her promo.

GOOD: Charlotte Flair and Naomi Promo

Charlotte Flair enters before commercial, starts going off on new year’s resolutions, as she wants to make more history. Talking about the Royal Rumble, a video package talking about entries into the rumble. Entries are… Rhea Ripley, Nikki ASH., Bella Twins, Shotzi, Natalya, Michelle McCool, Dana Brooke, Carmella, Queen Zelina, Mickie James, Tamina, Aliyah, Summer Rae, Naomi, Shayna Baszler, Lita, Kelly Kelly, and Charlotte Flair! Naomi comes out after. Naomi slaps Charlotte and a match is made between them.

This gets a “good“ just because of the sure fact that they announced some women’s rumble entries including shocking ones like the Bellas, Mickie James, and Lita.

Match 2:

GREAT: Charlotte Flair Vs Naomi

The match started before the commercial came back. Decent action before Sonya Deville comes out and says Naomi can’t win via count-out and Charlotte takes advantage after that. (With the news of Mickie James blowing up social media and the WR group chats, I haven’t paid enough attention to this match) Sonya continues to screw with Naomi as she gets a rope break, saying the match is no disqualification now. A unique method of Natural selection for the finish of the match.

Some good action with a slight overbooked feeling of the Sonya Deville stuff. Aside from Sonya Deville abusing her power stuff it hindered the match rating as well. The Action was great, but the main focus of the match was not the match itself, it was Naomi and Sonya’s rivalry.

Results: Charlotte Wins after Natural Selection

Coby Galenzoski WR Star Rating – 3.75 Stars

GOOD: New Day and Usos Separate Backstage Interviews

Both interviews were short and sweet but together they can be rated as one. Nothing too spectacular as they continue to bill their street fight as the match that ends the rivalry.

Roman’s Rumble opponent is going to be announced later in the night, via Adam Pearce’s choice.

GOOD: Happy Talk with ???

Happy Corbin continues to have good delivery with his promos, doing what they are supposed to do. Madcap is mocking Drew by dressing like him and having a toy sword. Madcap is decent with a Scottish accent. Viking Raiders storm the ring as they set up a tag team match.

Match 3:

AVERAGE: Madcap Moss and Happy Corbin Vs Viking Raiders

This match was short and had a couple of decent moments, with Moss running the ropes as fast as he could. Nothing spectacular in this match. And it is completely skippable.

Results: Madcap Moss pins Erik after the “Punchline.”

Coby Galenzoski WR Star Rating – 2.75 Stars

Match 4:

GREAT: The Usos Vs The New Day – Street Fight for the Smackdown Tag Team Championships.

This is what you expect from the Usos and the New Day. An awesome and fun contest between the two teams. Not too much weapon involvement, Fun crowd and table spot. The match wasn’t on the level of their past matches or the Day 1 match, but the match was enjoyable.

Results: Usos win with the 1D through the table.

Coby Galenzoski WR Star Rating – 4.00 Stars

GREAT: To close the show, Seth Rollins enters Roman Reigns Locker room confirming the title match is Roman Reigns Vs Seth Rollins at the Royal Rumble Premium Live Event. This had an atmosphere that was really good, so a fun way to end the show was the Roman and Rollins stare down.

Overall Smackdown started off the year with a solid Smackdown having some fun in-ring action and some fun/exciting announcements towards the Royal Rumble Event. We saw an awesome main event where the Usos and New Day prove they always deliver. There was nothing to complain about. Smackdown is needing stars and it is showing because they are having Roman Reigns Vs Seth Rollins for the Rumble event. WWE opened the “Fed”bidden Door announcing Mickie James to be in the rumble with the question of if she will represent the Knockouts Division as their champion come the end of the month. It is Royal Rumble Season and things are getting interesting with the company that needs it the most.

Show theme and presentation: 7/10

Watchability: 8/10

Production: 8/10

Storyline progression: 8/10

Crowd reaction: 8/10

Overall Rating. 7.4/10

The post “Roman Reigns has a Visionary for his next Opponent” Friday Night Smackdown Review 01/07/22 appeared first on Wrestling Republic.

It’s pretty clear that the actor has high hopes for his victory, taking shots at both Roman Reigns and Big E and proclaiming himself a champion. While it has yet to be addressed by WWE on social media or on the Day 1 pay-per-view, it’s likely that they will soon to make it official. Knoxville will likely only be in the bout for a short period before being tossed out. It remains to be seen if they plan to build towards his appearance in the weeks leading up to the match. If they do, fans can expect his trademark buffoonery to ensue.
