WWE may be planning to hold the SmackDown World Cup with contestants from many different countries for men and women.
Last night on SmackDown, WWE announced the brand would be holding a SmackDown World Cup Tournament starting next week. No further details have been provided yet, but right now it’s being assumed that contestants will be of many different nationalities.
Supposedly, there will be tournaments for both the men and the women, possibly running side by side from each other. This news comes a month after Triple H revealed plans to hold World Cup-type scenarios moving forward on WWE programming.
It was at first assumed that the World Cup Tournament would feature wrestlers from NXT, but that may not be so. But as the contestants have yet to be announced, this could change as Triple H likes to surprise the fans.
Who Could Be Competing in the World Cup Tournament?
As things stand, SmackDown already features stars from eight different countries on its roster, and all could be competing. These stars include Drew McIntyre (Scotland), Sheamus (Ireland), Gunther (Austria), Santos Escobar (Mexico), Sami Zayn (Canada), and Shinsuke Nakamura (Japan).
On the women’s side of the World Cup Tournament, there’s Natalya (Canada), Xia Li (China), and Emma (Australia). It’s unclear at this time if there are any other competitors that will be added to better pack out the tournament.
There are rumors of WWE looking to re-sign released Welsh wrestler Teagan Nox so she could show up as well. Triple H could still pull competitors from NXT if need be, but fans will just have to wait and see.
Let us know who you would like to see appear in the SmackDown World Cup Tournament.
