For this year’s Backlash, Rhea Ripley defended the SmackDown Women’s Championship against the LWO’s Zelina Vega. This match was made all the more special because Vega is of Puerto Rican descent and wrestling in Puerto Rico. In honor of this, Zelina Vega is today’s Wrestler of the Day.
Born and raised in New York, Vega suffered tragedy as her father was one of many killed in the September 11th terror attacks. Determined to honor his memory, Vega volunteered with several charities related to the attacks’ victims. It was also in honor of her father that she pursued a career in wrestling.
After a few years on the indies, Zelina Vega joined TNA where she became a tag team champion alongside Sarita. She left the promotion after three years and returned to the indies until signing with WWE in 2017. In the early part of her time with the company, Vega served as Andrade’s manager in NXT before taking a more active in-ring role on the main roster. However, she was released from WWE in 2020 after a dispute over giving the company control of her social media. She returned seven months later, having a successful run where she won Queen of the Ring and then the tag team titles.
After another hiatus, Vega returned with Legado Del Fantasma briefly as a heel faction. She and the rest of the group have since turned face. Unfortunately for Vega, Ripley defeated her and has yet to win her first solo title in WWE.
