After a decades-long career, William Regal has distinguished himself outside the ring on and off-screen. After a brief run in AEW, Regal has returned to WWE in a backstage role. In honor of his 55th birthday, William Regal is today’s Wrestler of the Day.
After training in Blackpool, Regal competed worldwide, earning him matches with both WWE and WCW. WCW was impressed enough with Regal to sign him to a contract. In his time with WCW, Regal defeated Ricky Steamboat for the TV Championship to kick off an impressive reign of 225 days. He also toured Japan with New Japan, challenging for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship in 1995.
After bouncing between companies, the year 2000 saw William Regal begin a stint in WWE that would last for more than two decades. It was during this time that Regal started his signature move of using brass knuckles to win matches. He would bring this move back to help MJF win the AEW World Championship. Fans will also remember William Regal as the on-screen authority figure in NXT. Regal saying “Wargames” has become iconic.
In the past few years, Regal has had a tumultuous go of things, getting fired from NXT, becoming the manager of the Blackpool Combat Club in AEW, and finally returning to WWE. Fans will remember his banter with Excalibur on AEW. Since returning to WWE, Regal has yet to appear on television as he has been in a behind-the-scenes role.
