On this day in 1997, Shawn Michaels gave his “I lost my smile” promo. While meant to convey what was originally thought to be a career-ending knee injury, fans better remember HBK telling fans that he lost his smile. Thankfully, the knee injury did not turn out to be career-ending and Michaels continued his career. In honor of this moment, Shawn Michaels is today’s Wrestler of the Day.
Michaels came to fame alongside Marty Janetty as a member of the tag team The Rockers. Despite their success, Shawn Michaels was destined for greater things, as he betrayed Janetty and went solo. After focusing on singles wrestling, HBK became one of the biggest stars of the 1990s. While he had a hall-of-fame career, Michaels had his low points which included the Montreal Screwjob and losing his job with WWE as a result of drug use. However, he found the Lord and cleaned up his life, allowing him to continue his career.
Turning his life around saw Shawn Michaels have many memorable Wrestlemania moments. These include facing the Undertaker and defeating Ric Flair at Wrestlemania XXIV. From the Rockers to D-Generation-X, Michaels enthralled fans and worked his way into the conversation of the best ever to do it. Since retiring, Michaels has been one of the leading figures at NXT.
