On May 1st, 2011 WWE held its Extreme Rules pay-per-view in Tampa, Florida. The card featured snoozers like the Country Whipping Match, it also featured legitimate contests like Christian defeating Alberto Del Rio to win the vacant World Heavyweight Championship. To honor the anniversary of the title win, Christian Cage is today’s Wrestler of the Day.
A native of Ontario, Canada, Christian Cage was childhood friends and trained in wrestling alongside future tag team partner, Edge. After teaming up on the independent scene, Edge and Christian signed with WWE, dropping the kayfabe last name of Cage. They initially formed the stable The Brood alongside Gangrel but achieved true stardom on their own. They featured in a star-studded tag team division that also featured the Hardys and the Dudley Boyz.
While a successful tag team wrestler, Cage has also achieved success as a singles competitor. In addition to the World Heavyweight Championship, he has also won the NWA World Championship and defeated Kenny Omega to become the Impact Champion. The mid-late 2000s saw Cage’s role in WWE reduce, ending with an appearance in the 2021 Royal Rumble. While a reduced WWE schedule suggested the end was near, Cage’s career has found new life in AEW.
