Creating a promo that not only captures the fans attention in that instance, but to create one that is talked about for years as a defining, game changing moment is the sign of an all-time great.
One moment in time can change the course of someone’s life, career and in some cases, it can have even further reaching impacts. In this piece, I want to look at ten promos/segments that dramatically changed the careers of the men involved and, in some cases, made significant impacts on the industry as well.
The focus of this piece is predominately on promos that happened many years ago because the impact that they had could truly be assessed. I didn’t want to include recent promos since their true impact cannot properly be assessed.
Promos like MJF‘s Childhood and Pipebomb, to me are two of the best promos that I have heard in years recently and these promos certainly elevated MJF as a next level performer, but since the payoff from the pipebomb hasn’t been fully realized yet I didn’t include it on this list. Could it eventually be a game changer when all is said and done? Absolutely, but it is too soon to truly tell that yet.
Please note, this list is NOT intended to be a definitive list, but these are ten promos/segments that in my opinion were game changing for the talent involved and like I said in some cases the industry as a whole.
10) Mankind’s Sit Down Interview With JR – WWF Raw Is War – June 9, 1997
This series of sit-down interviews between Mankind and JR were designed to give the audience a look into this deranged persona of Mick Foley. Up until this point the WWF audience only knew him as the crazy man that could take an insane amount of punishment, him pulling his own hair out and feuding with the Undertaker for the most part. This segment was the first real glimpse at the man behind the mask, Mick Foley.
This is really some of Mick’s greatest work of his career, as he truly grabbed hold of the audience making them feel sympathy for Mankind, but at the same time when he attacked JR he reminded the audience he was still a lunatic that could snap at any moment. These promos helped elevate Foley especially in Vince McMahon’s eyes he never really wanted him, but let JR hire him anyway. Considering the matches and moments that Foley gave us that likely were built on the foundation of this promo in Vince’s eyes here was truly game changing for his career.
