For almost 17 years Johnny Gargano has given his blood, sweat and tears to the wrestling business and his fans. Narrowing the list down to the ten must see matches so far of Johnny Gargano’s career is not easy, because this list could be much longer.
Johnny Gargano is a talent I first became aware of in NXT and saw something special in him from the very beginning. Once I started looking at his career before NXT and Johnny Gargano the person, I became an even bigger fan of his both personally and professionally.
I have previously written that Johnny Gargano was the heart and soul of NXT and I talked about his return home to WWE in another piece. While writing the return home piece I got the idea to put together a list of ten matches of Johnny Gargano’s career that I would recommend fans should check out.
Disclaimer: It is sad that I need to say this, but before anyone complains, this is my subjective opinion of the matches that I would suggest any fan to check out if they haven’t seen them. I know there are other matches fans would have on this list and may even disagree with the order that I have them and that is perfectly fine this is not supposed to be a definitive list. It is a list of the matches that I think best signify his career the level of talent and performer he is and why he is called Johnny Wrestling.
Now on to the list:
10) Johnny Gargano vs Ricochet – Open The Freedom Gate Title Match – Evolve 10: A Tribute To The Arena
This is years before their encounters in NXT and is a match many of you reading this may not even be aware of but is definitely one worth checking out. A little over 10.5 years ago, in the infamous ECW Arena, Johnny Gargano went to war with Ricochet for the Open The Freedom Gate Championship. Gargano was defending the championship and early in the match Johnny injured his back and you would never know it by the performance that Johnny gave.
I had no idea he injured his back until after I saw the match. For over 20 minutes, these men put on an amazing performance. Johnny successfully defended the title but ended up in the hospital post-match. I included this match on the list because it shows Johnny Gargano’s heart and dedication even early in his career and that hasn’t diminished years later.
