The beginning of 2021 was quite dry for Minoru Suzuki, struggling to find a spot near the top of the card. After being one of New Japan’s most reliable main eventers for three years running. However, these top matches stopped coming for Suzuki. Despite a lackluster first eight months, the tides shifted on one single night.

On September 5th, 2021, Minoru Suzuki debuted at All Out to confront Jon Moxley, the Boogeyman of New Japan Pro Wrestling. Suzuki garnered one of the loudest reactions from the Chicago crowd, starting his US tour with a bang. The next two months were jam packed, as Suzuki made appearances in Impact, GCW, and AEW, along with several smaller indie promotions. These appearances included matches against Jon Moxley, Bryan Danielson, Nick Gage. Josh Alexander, and so many others.

The number of high quality matches Suzuki wrestled with some of the best of the world in under 60 days was outstanding. This run has a minimum of 10-15 matches that range anywhere from pretty good to outright phenomenal. With the exception of the aforementioned Bryan Danielson, Minoru Suzuki most likely had the greatest few month runs of 2021.

These few months weren’t only crucial for Suzuki, but also for New Japan as a whole. NJPW has always been known for their great in-ring work and sport-like manner while also using long-term storytelling extremely well. However, the company has seen a drop in quality starting in 2020, primarily due to the pandemic and simply bad booking. These struggles along with their foreign nature explains their struggle in growing their American audience. Despite running multiple huge cards in the US and producing NJPW Strong, their audience in the States remains stagnant. However, one highlight to American audiences has been Minoru Suzuki. He is a great character for an introduction to the strong style of NJPW and exposing the larger western audience to the company, hoping to draw more eyes to the product. In terms of Western Expansion in the year of 2021, no one in New Japan can even touch the great work of The King.

Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, as Suzuki returned to New Japan in November. Since returning to Japan, Suzuki continued to partake in low quality feuds, most notably with Toru Yano over the King of Pro-Wrestling Title.

However, Suzuki is slated for a second US tour, starting in April with a matchup against Killer Kross in his NJPW debut. Hopefully, we are treated to another tour that’s even a fraction as good, when Minoru Suzuki begins to wreak havoc again back on American soil.

During yesterday’s Elimination Chamber pay-per-view, Brock Lesnar won back the WWE Championship in the main event during the Elimination Chamber match. This will now set up Lesnar vs Reigns for WrestleMania, for both top titles. While this speaks to the larger of WWE not creating other stars, I want to focus on their lack of focus on the WWE Championship.

The WWE title, a belt that has stretched for nearly sixty years, was the most prestigious title in wrestling, held by countless legends. However, the past five years have been a difficult time for the legendary strap. Since 2016, there have been seven WWE title reigns that have lasted for less than two months, including four title reigns during 2022 already (Big E’s reign ended January 1st). And the rest have been fairly short, with only one eclipsing 200 days. It barely feels like a main event title, main eventing WrestleMania once in the past five years. But why does it feel so lackluster?

The main culprit behind this has been the brand split, and the introduction of the Universal Championship. Since the founding of the new belt, whether red or blue, it has become tethered to the biggest stars in the company. Whether it’s Brock Lesnar, Seth Rollins, or Roman Reigns, it feels like they are always winning or pining after the Universal title, making it feel like the biggest title in the company. It has also been treated like a proper world title, with the two longest world title reigns in company history, held by Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns. It has also main evented WrestleMania three of the five years since its introduction, the most of any belt, and two more than the WWE title.

This focus on the Universal Championship has been to great detriment of the other world title, making it feel second tier. Brock Lesnar only won the WWE Title in a secondary storyline, while his main focus has been Roman Reigns and his strap, and he did it twice. It simply feels like a toy, getting passed around to fit whatever is needed for that particular month. A World Title should feel more important, something people should be willing to shorten their career over, not some stale prop. The obvious example is Kofi Kingston and Big E, who after the big title didn’t look to win the championship back, or have it drive them mad, they just simply moved on with their lives. The fact that Big E wasn’t even in the chamber but instead is back on Smackdown in a tag team with Kofi feels truly wrong. If you lose a world championship, it seems logical you would do everything in your power to try and get it back.

There’s the main key on how to make the title feel important again. Make it something everybody wants and whoever holds it should be treated as the top of the food chain. While I’m not sure how WWE will book the title vs title match at WrestleMania, I really don’t like any of the options. But, if it were up to me and I had to book it like this, I would have Roman Reigns win and unify both titles. While it brings up multiple issues with the brand split, it would feel more genuine as a top prize, and would make the main event scene full again, meaning you wouldn’t have to recycle the same five guys for each strap. It also allows Raw to feel like an A-show, not backseat to the Reigns train rolling on Friday.

Whichever direction this story goes, it feels like it has done a massive amount of damage to the WWE championship, and I don’t see a way it can be fixed anytime soon.

On the January 10th episode of Raw, RK-Bro lost their Tag Team Titles to Alpha Academy. This ended their 4-plus month reign, being one of the highlights of Raw each week. While a rematch is in order, I believe that not only should RK-Bro not only lose the match but should break up in the immediate future.

The pairing of Riddle and Randy Orton has been a gold mine for WWE, being an extremely entertaining odd couple who have been one of the best things about Raw for the past calendar year. Despite still being quite a hot act with plenty of available options, I think that the best thing is to break up Orton and Riddle.

I believe that the biggest reason to break them up in order to build up Riddle vs Randy Orton at Wrestlemania. Between his US title run and the work he’s done as a part of RK-Bro, Riddle has been elevated to a higher opinion of the fans. His great charisma, character work, and great in-ring work, makes him a prime candidate for a new WWE-main eventer. I believe that Riddle should be a World Champion within the next two years, preferably the end of 2022. The first step is by beating Randy Orton at Wrestlemania.

The story is fairly simple and writes itself. Sometime after the Rumble, Orton gets fed up with Riddle and seeing him as incompetent, turning on him in a moment of frustration. This leads to several months of build, probably including Orton writing Riddle off TV for at least a month. Eventually Riddle returns and sets up the match for Mania. Riddle then proves himself by beating the Viper and proving himself as a top guy.

Beating Randy Orton would be absolutely massive for Riddle and would help propel him into the main event. WWE is in desperate need of new main event talent, and Riddle has been genuinely built for two years with big fan support. Riddle and Orton could be a great feud and turn Riddle into the biggest babyface in the company. While nothing is certain, I believe that Matt Riddle is headed towards great things.

On January 4, New Japan will present the first night of their annual Wrestle Kingdom show. While there are many intriguing matches on the card, the one with the most excitement is the main event as IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Shingo Tagaki defends his title against “The Rainmaker” Kazuchika Okada. However, that will only be the first match for the championship, as Will Ospreay will face the winner of that match on night two the next day. I believe that it would be smart to crown a new champion this week, and here’s why.

First, a little background going in. After winning the IWGP Heavyweight and IWGP Intercontinental titles at last year’s Wrestle Kingdom, Kota Ibushi unified the two belts as the new IWGP World Heavyweight championship. This was quite an unpopular decision, as many people enjoyed the Intercontinental title on its own, and the fact the new belt was a step down from the old belt’s design was disappointing. Ibushi’s reign wouldn’t last long, as New Japan Cup Winner Will Ospreay defeated him for the title on April 4. Ospreay would have some terrible luck with the belt as well. After successfully defending the title against Shingo Tagaki, it was revealed that Ospreay had suffered a neck injury and would be forced to vacate the belt after only 46 days. A new champion was crowned at Dominion, as Shingo Tagaki defeated Kazuchika Okada, winning his first world title in New Japan. Tagaki has held onto the belt since, having four successful defenses in an over 200-day run. His run has been good so far, the highlight being a win against Hiroshi Tanahashi at the Tokyo Dome. However, as Wrestle Kingdom 16 approaches, I believe it’s best to crown a new champion, whether that’s Okada or Ospreay.

Best to start with Will Ospreay. Ospreay has been on a meteoric rise since becoming a heavyweight in NJPW, between his match at last year’s Wrestle Kingdom against Okada, his New Japan Cup victory, or winning the top belt. Ospreay is one of the best performers in the world today, able to put on a 30 minute classic anytime. It also helps that he is British and speaks English as his primary language. This helps New Japan try and capture the western audience that has evaded them for several years now. As NJPW tries to get out of this funk they’ve been in for several years, I believe a new face like Will Ospreay would be a suitable candidate for champion.

The only athlete I’d consider more suitable is Kazuchika Okada. Okada has been synonymous with the heavyweight belt since 2012, with his rivalries with Tanahashi, Omega, and Naito. Okada has held the belt five times for a combined 1,790 days including a 720-day reign from 2016-2018. However, the belt has evaded his capture lately. After losing the belt at Wrestle Kingdom 14 against Tetsuya Naito, he has been unable to reclaim the title. Now I believe it is time for Okada to win the title back and bring NJPW back to its glory days of five years ago. Okada is the perfect candidate, as he is easily the most recognizable man in the company, to both local and foreign viewers. He also has an incredible presence, able to appear as a mega star no matter the place on the card. He is also one of the best performers in the world, routinely spitting out 30–60-minute classics almost every time he wrestles. The Rainmaker has been held away from the title for too long, it’s time he wins it back.

As 2021 has come to a close, it’s important to look back on the year, specifically when it pertains to pro wrestling. However, one of my fellow writers at Wrestling Republic already covered that topic. So, I will be using this article to look towards the future, and how to improve wrestling in 2022.

(Remember these are just my opinions and thoughts, and by no means guidelines or standards for promotions, wrestlers, and fans).

For wrestling companies, the main way to improve their shows is by adding variety and changing up story structures. In the major companies, most feuds will develop and climax the same way. WWE’s preferred style is to either have the feuding wrestlers face each other several times on TV with lackluster finishes, eventually building to the blowoff match. They will also rehash segments constantly, such as “can they coexist” tag matches, endless talk show segments, or having one-on-one matches during a tag feud. AEW suffers these same problems, using multi man tag matches on every show, having interviews always get interrupted, or using prerecorded promos. By adding creativity and variety, it helps create more memorable segments that feel less repetitive. A good example is that Jericho does his best to add new segments to his feuds to keep things fresh. Good examples include The Five Labors of Jericho, Le Dinner Debonaire, or the debate against Orange Cassidy. All of these segments were completely different to what has been presented on AEW TV, and so they all stick out and have been memorable parts of Dynamite.

Another way to add variety is adding different match types and limiting others. WWE and AEW love to use the same stipulations in order to heighten feuds. Gimmicks like the Street Fight, Cage Match, and Hell in a Cell have all been overexposed and can feel stale when used improperly. However, a good stipulation can help recharge a feud and set a match apart. Using more matches like Ironman, 2 out of 3 Falls, Submission, or Last Man Standing add variety and help keep the audience entertained and hyper focused on the adjusted rules and the raised stakes.

2022 should be used to help create more stars in the industry and develop faith in the future of the business. There were several major advancements with the rise of stars like Damian Priest, Bron Breakker, or MJF. However, it’s important to double down on these developing stars, as all of these mentioned talents should win a world title within the calendar year. In addition, continuing to build young talent helps keep fans invested and positioning young wrestlers higher on the card gives them more time to build their star status. AEW has a large crop of young stars in their early twenties who have potential and following. NXT 2.0 is doing something similar, introducing us to a large crop of young talents, allowing them to shine on a big stage and introduce the world to the future of the company.

The final improvement for the wrestling community is to be kinder and more understanding of one another. While this message is absolutely corny, it feels extremely necessary. The IWC is one of the most toxic fanbases online. The best example is the tribalism felt between WWE and AEW fans. A fan of one company will hate anything from the “enemy” and enjoy anything that hurts the opposite promotion. This sort of warped mentality leads to some nasty places and furthers the divide between the community. There needs to be an understanding with the fact that people can have different opinions, and that no one is necessarily right. Another problem is the overall hate directed primarily towards wrestlers. These terrible comments help no one and give the entire IWC a terrible reputation. As wrestling fans, we need to learn to let others enjoy things, and to respectfully disagree and oppose lashing out. Positivity and level-headedness are the first steps towards patching the divide in the community, because at the end of the day we all enjoy professional wrestling.

While Impact isn’t talked about nearly enough, they have multiple marquee talents up and down their roster. One part is the established legends, like Tommy Dreamer and Rhino. Their talented Knockouts roster, including Deonna Purazzo, Mercedes Martinez, and Mickie James. Perhaps their strong suit of the X-division with performers like Rohit Raju, Ace Austin, or Trey Miguel.

What often gets lost in the shuffle is their main event picture. While not as deep as the rest of the roster, the main event has been in good hands thanks to Moose.

Moose started off the year strong, teaming with Rich Swann and Chris Sabin to face off against Kenny Omega and the Good Brothers. This match showcased what Moose could do on a bigger scale, the performance highlighted by a spanish fly from the top rope.

Moose continued to pick up steam, declaring himself the TNA World Champion, despite the title being retired long ago. He became so dominant that the only option was to put him into a title unification against Impact World Champion Rich Swann. Even though Moose lost the match and his belt, this failed to slow his momentum.

Credit-F4W Online

Several months later, Moose earned himself a shot at the Impact Championship, this time facing off against Kenny Omega. He also earned the distinction of having the only Impact match at Daily’s Place, AEW’s homebase. Moose found himself on the losing end once again, but impressed against one of the best in the world, in what was probably Kenny Omega’s best match in Impact.

His Impact run would slow down after facing Omega, but this gave Moose the opportunity to work with New Japan and face Tomohiro Ishii at Resurgence. In his first match for the promotion in five years, Moose worked with Ishii in a brutal, hard-hitting affair, putting on another great match. Moose would also face Juice Robinson at Battle In The Valley, seeming to make more frequent appearances for NJPW.

Moose got the chance to return to the spotlight, winning the Call Your Shot Gauntlet battle royal at Bound For Glory, earning the opportunity to challenge for any title at any point. He would waste no time, dethroning newly crowned Impact Champion Josh Alexander on the same night. This marked the first time Moose won the grand prize in Impact after grinding for the better part of five years.

Credit-Cageside Seats

He followed up one of the best heel moves of the year by cutting a magnificent promo on the next episode of Impact. Moose made several references to the industry’s top stars like The New Day, Becky Lynch, and Roman Reigns. This promo did a magnificent job of establishing Moose as a top star in the industry, one which Impact will be heavily invested in for years to come.

The best part is that Moose’s title reign has only just started. He has only defended the tile once on Impact programming, defeating Eddie Edwards in a spectacular hardcore match to close Turning Point 2021. He will defend the title for the first time in 2022 at Hard to Kill against both Matt Cardona and W. Morrissey.

Moose has the potential to become the unstoppable heel champion of Impact, with his run should look very similar to Bobby Lashley’s. He should be running through the roster with ease, making it all the more impressive when someone can finally dethrone this unstoppable machine. Either way, Moose has earned his spot and isn’t looking to give it up any time soon.

On the September 29th episode of Dynamite, Sammy Guevara defeated Miro, handing God’s Favorite Champion his first loss and winning the TNT Championship. By having Guevara dethrone Miro and his great title run, it showed great faith in the Spanish God, and should have led to a wave of momentum that propelled Sammy into the main event scene. Unfortunately, his booking since then has been disappointing.

Even though this article is largely negative, there have been several moments and matches I have enjoyed from the reign of the Spanish God. The biggest advantage of the TNT title is the open challenge aspect. Since it doesn’t rely on any rankings and month-long builds to matches, it allows the champion to face great wrestlers and have magnificent matches. Guevara has been no exception, wrestling great matches with Bobby Fish, Jay Lethal, and Tony Nese. These were all built up with short feuds paying off immediately.

However, the problem with the championship came in its extended feud between the Inner Circle and American Top Team. This was an underwhelming rivalry which was all about the promos and the moments, not about in ring work or wrestling psychology, which is Sammy’s strong suit. This matchup was also mostly about Dan Lambert, his MMA boys, and Chris Jericho. This format left The Men of The Year, Proud and Powerful, Jake Hager, and importantly Sammy Guevara feeling second fiddle to Jericho and his antics. This resulted in Guevara only defending the title once in a five week stretch, which is a bad look for AEW’s workhorse title.

Sammy Guevara will have his fifth title defense against Cody Rhodes on the Christmas Day Rampage. Working with Cody comes with a lot of baggage, with the fan reaction he’s getting and the odd booking surrounding that reaction. It doesn’t help that Cody defeating Guevara for the title and turning into a massive heel is the most plausible thing in the world. However, I believe a win for Sammy would be a massive turning point, allowing Guevara to improve his title reign. By having him defend the title about twice a month for the next three months, it gives the run time to breathe and keeps the championship prestigious and important.

As the year comes to a close, it’s easy to reminisce on some of wrestling’s highlights from 2021. Whether these are the best matches, moments, or the best wrestlers. Many wrestlers have had outstanding years, such as Roman Reigns, Kenny Omega, or Shingo Tagaki. But when it comes to the best women’s wrestler of 2021, I believe that Deonna Purrazzo is the sound recipient of that award.

Purrazzo started off the year as Impact Knockouts Champion, winning the title back from Su Yung at Turning Point on November 14, 2020. The Virtuosa held the title for nearly a year, successfully defending the strap fourteen times before eventually losing the title to Mickie James at Bound For Glory. She defeated several high level opponents including Taya Valkyrie, Rok-C, and Thunder Rosa. Impact is known for its incredibly talented Knockouts division, and Purrazzo was able to stand head and shoulders above the rest, feeling like a true star.

Deonna didn’t just make headlines as Knockouts Champion, having a wide variety of memorable moments during 2021. During this year Purrazzo: became Impact Homecoming Queen, won the AAA Reina de Reinas Title, was ranked 3rd in PWI’s Top 150 Women Wrestlers of 2021, and retired Jazz after beating her at Hardcore Justice. Purrazzo was given the spotlight to shine countless times this year, and has continued to earn the trust and hype given to her.

Purrazzo’s schedule is only getting more crowded as 2022 approaches. She is currently in the title picture for three championships over the upcoming months. Firstly she has been challenged by a returning Taya Valkyrie for her AAA Reina de Reinas Title. Next she is getting her rematch for the Knockouts Title against Mickie James at Hard To Kill. Deonna has also challenged Rok-C for her Ring of Honor Women’s Championship in a winner take all match, which will take place sometime soon.

Deonna Purrazzo has become one of the best female wrestlers of today, skyrocketing her stock over the past two years. Purrazzo has had an absolutely phenomenal 2021 and is in my opinion the greatest women’s wrestler of the year.

On November 24, 2021, AEW Dynamite aired live from the Wintrust Arena in Chicago Illinois. The episode started with an incredible promo battle between MJF and CM Punk. It is common knowledge that Chicago is Punk’s hometown, which had a massive impact on the segment between Punk and MJF. The Chicago crowd absolutely adored punk, giving him the biggest pop of the night and throwing their support behind the hometown hero. MJF got a very different treatment, being showered with boos, the crowd not letting him speak.

However this dynamic was changed as the December 8th episode of Dynamite aired from Long Island, the hometown city for MJF. When Punk opened the show to call out MJF, he was met with a chorus of boos, the first time in his AEW run. This caused Punk to turn on the Long Island crowd, insulting them and their precious team, increasing their displeasure with the Second City Saint. The crowd changed their tune when MJF appeared, receiving a hero’s welcome and being cheered for the first time in his AEW run, probably his whole career. The excitement only grew when he won the Casino Battle Royal, including eliminating his bodyguard Wardlow. Despite continuing to act as a cowardly heel, the crowd couldn’t help but to cheer the hometown hero. This change in dynamic and awareness speaks to how All Elite uses the locations of their shows to their advantage to create the biggest reaction.

The most obvious way AEW does this is by having their wrestlers win in their hometown. Examples of this include Jon Moxley defeating Minoru Suzuki in his hometown of Cincinnati, and Lance Archer winning the IWGP U.S. Championship in his home state of Texas in a Texas Deathmatch. This treatment is not only reserved for matches, with Hangman Adam Page going to his state of Virginia for his celebration after winning the AEW Championship at Full Gear. This is used to have the crowd get extra invested in the match or segment by using a wrestler who they can have a personal connection with.

However AEW doesn’t only use this to generate a positive reaction, but also put heat on certain wrestlers as well. A small-scale example would be MJF squashing Bryce Donovan in his hometown of Boston Massachusetts. A more prominent example of this is Bryan Danielson defeating three members of the Dark Order in each of their hometowns. By beating these wrestlers in their hometowns it encourages the audiences to boo the wrestlers more and get more behind their future opponent.

The final factor is how AEW adds importance to certain locations and cities and gets the crowds involved. The most obvious example is AEW using Daily’s Place in Jacksonville as their home base, and leaning into this and making it a big deal every time they go back to Jacksonville. Tony Khan sat down on the Rasslin’ with Brandon F. Walker podcast and talked about how important certain locations are to the company, between touring Chicago before Thanksgiving and going to Greensboro North Carolina for their Christmas shows. Making these places and dates important builds anticipation for certain shows all by emphasizing the location of the show.

On April 15, 2020, Matt Cardona (then known as Zack Ryder) was released by WWE during the first of many budget cuts. Ryder had very little success as a member of the WWE roster. In 2011, he started his YouTube series, increasing his popularity with the fans. He was rewarded with this newfound popularity, becoming U.S. Champion during December of that year. Unfortunately it was an underwhelming reign, as he would quickly get involved with John Cena and Kane, being repeatedly embarrassed and treated as a joke. He lost the title in mid-January and would be swiftly moved back down the card.

Ryder would have to wait four more years before winning another title. At WrestleMania 32 in a ladder match for the Intercontinental championship, Ryder was added as a late replacement for Neville who had been injured. Ryder then won the belt at the biggest show of the year, in a massive feel-good moment no one was expecting. Unfortunately this title reign would also be extremely short, dropping the title the next night on Raw to The Miz.

The rest of Ryder’s run would be unremarkable, apart from winning the Raw Tag Titles with partner and friend Curt Hawkins during the WrestleMania 35 preshow. Ryder was released a year later, after a 15-year run with the company. However, this release has been a blessing in disguise for Cardona, who has reinvented himself turning into one of the hottest commodities on the market.

His first major appearance came in All Elite Wrestling, as he would align himself with Cody and The Nightmare Family in a feud against The Dark Order. This rivalry would climax on September 5th, 2020, as Cardona and the Nightmare Family defeated the Dark Order in an 8-man tag at All Out. While his time in AEW was nothing spectacular, Cardona was able introduce and showcase this new character and attitude for the first time.

Cardona moved on as he would debut in Impact Wrestling in January 2021 during Hard to Kill. Since joining the company, Matt Cardona has been positioned in an upper-midcard role and has positioned in several angles with real life fiancée Chelsea Green. He will be in the main event of Hard to Kill 2022, facing off against W.Morrissey and Moose in a three-way for the Impact World Championship.

However in my opinion, the greatest thing Cardona has done both since his release and during his career has been his run in Game Changer Wrestling. On June 6th, 2021, Matt Cardona came to the ring disguised pretending to be Jon Moxley and attacked GCW Champion Nick Gage. After unmasking, the crowd in attendance turned on Cardona, as he would launch one of the greatest heel runs of 2021. Cardona simply acted like he was above the GCW promotion and felt that the deathmatch style of the promotion and their champion Nick Gage was barbaric and disgusting. This storyline ended in a deathmatch between Matt Cardona and Nick Gage on July 24th, 2021. After a brutal match, Cardona was able to secure the victory and the title via shenanigans. The fans were absolutely outraged, throwing cups, beer cans, among other items into the ring after the match. Cardona would eventually drop the title to Moxley during early September, ending his short run with the belt. This storyline created the most buzz and popularity around GCW, and it was all due to Matt Cardona. His ability to get the fans to hate him and truly bring wrestling back to the old days where people actually despised the bad guys, if only for a couple months.

Cardona also attacked NWA Champion Trevor Murdoch at the end of their Hard Times 2 show this past weekend, marking the fourth major promotion that Cardona has worked with during the last two years.

In conclusion, Matt Cardona took an unfortunate situation and was able to improve and develop a character that has connected with audiences and has been booked by the biggest promotions outside the WWE as a result. Cardona has risen his stock tremendously in the past year, and will have plenty of opportunities to increase his accolades over the next 12 months.
