Current WWE superstar Shelton Benjamin recently revealed that he only learned he was going to win the Intercontinental championship when Chris Jericho did not kick out during their title match back in 2004.
This event occurred at the inaugural edition of WWE’s Taboo Tuesday where the fans had the ability to vote online to choose who they wanted to see wrestle. Many fans believed that Batista would’ve been the pick to face Chris Jericho for the IC title but it was revealed that Shelton Benjamin had won the poll.
Benjamin explained during the Ruthless Aggression show on the WWE Network that everything went really quickly and everyone was a bit confused:
“Going into that match, I knew nothing, absolutely nothing. I didn’t know if I was wrestling because they didn’t know if I was wrestling. Jericho didn’t know if I was wrestling. We went out and had that match on the fly. I didn’t know I was winning until Jericho didn’t kick out,” (H/T Sportskeeda)
This whole confusion led to Benjamin capturing his first ever Intercontinental Championship with a shocking look on his face as he had just learned, alongside the fans and the audience, that he was now the new champion.
It has unfortunately been a while since Benjamin captured a singles championship in the WWE but he surely has a couple of years left in him to surprise us with a shocking title win like his 2004 victory.
