WWE superstar and future Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio recently teased a major announcement that would forever change his legacy. He was rumored to have had something in the works for a while, and now it has been revealed. As stated in the official press release, Rey has been in collaboration with studio ¡Viva Calavera! To produce a new cartoon series for Cartoon Network Latin America titled Rey Mysterio vs. La Oscuridad, which is slated to premiere some time next year.
The new show has been described as an action-comedy series. It will follow Rey and a wrestling fan named Oscar as they battle the forces of evil, both supernatural and wrestling-related. The show’s main antagonist will be a character named Uroboros, an evil individual described as a user of malevolent forces he has no understanding.
Vice President of Content and Original Productions, WarnerMedia Kids & Family, Latin America, spoke of this new venture at the press conference. “We are very excited to be able to share with Cartoon Network and Rey Mysterio fans more details and color of this incredible production made in Mexico. We are confident that you will enjoy the surprises we have in store and that the show will meet all your expectations.”
¡Viva Calavera! Founders The Skull Brothers also spoke of their new show. “To have an action-comedy series on Cartoon Network is a dream come true, that it puts Mexico and Lucha Libre at the center is even more, but that it has as its protagonist Rey Mysterio, whom we have admired since we were children, is simply indescribable. We believe that fans will greatly appreciate this new series, the result of the work and passion of so many people.” (H/T wrestlinginc.com)
It was noted at the release that the series would debut on Cartoon Network Latin America with ten episodes. However, no exact date for the premiere was released, only that it will be sometime next year. Although Rey Mysterio currently works for WWE, no mention of his employer was made at the press conference, indicating that they have no part in the series. As WWE does not own the Rey Mysterio name, the legendary luchador was likely to partake in this venture without their involvement. As of this writing, he has not made an official statement on the show.
