WWE is a machine that produces an enormous amount of television programming. You have Raw, Smackdown, and NXT every week. Along with Premier Live Events in most months. Sometimes, these PLEs fall flat, and the quality of some could be better than others. It could be time for WWE to reduce the amount of PLEs they produce.
Building Anticipation For A PLE
There is something special about a PLE. You are seeing the top stars of the day competing in high-profile matchups. Many of the most significant moments in the company’s history have been at PLE events. These shows are the likes of Summerslam, WrestleMania, and Royal Rumble. You can still have many events like this throughout the calendar year. Instead of having a PLE every month, WWE can put on a show two months apart. Take the upcoming Royal Rumble, for example; it has been two months since Survivor Series. It has allowed excitement to build for the Royal Rumble.
There Are Too Many PLEs Right Now
There were 11 PLEs in 2023, which is too many. The major four shows are when the big storylines reach their climax. Of course, these events are Survivor Series, Summerslam, Royal Rumble, and Wrestlemania. WWE will build their big stories to these PLE. It means other shows such as Backlash, Payback, and Fastlane feel predictable. You rarely see a main world title change hands on those shows. This is because the company usually uses the matches to build to the marquee events.
WWE Could Use It To Help Raw and Smackdown
Furthermore, it will give more chances to put more critical matchups on Raw and Smackdown. The shows are very long now, and if WWE decide to cut back on PLEs. It could allow the weekly TV show to have more high-profile matches. You can only have a certain number of matches on the night. If there are fewer PLEs, then only so many stories can make the cut. These stories could run on Raw or Smackdown. It would make those TV shows feel important because there is more are on the line. It also will put eyes on superstars who would only sometimes make it on a PLE card.
Fewer PLEs will make them more memorable, allowing WWE to build up better storylines. It could also result in better-quality shows. What would be interesting is seeing which PLEs WWE would take off their calendar. Finally, it would be cheaper to be a company fan, especially in the UK. It is because it’s £15 per PLE, which is quite expensive each month.
