Kevin Owens (formerly known as Kevin Steen on the independent scene) made his much-anticipated debut on the WWE main roster in quite a shocking manner as he stood up to John Cena. In this article, I want to give two brief observations on why Kevin Owens is such a compelling character.
Memorable Debut:
Owen’s debut has been one of the most memorable ones in recent years as it was simple yet effective, it let the audience understand his motivations on who he is as a wrestler as well as the lengths he would go through to make it to the top.

What makes Kevin Owens so compelling is how relatable he is, he is not your typical wrestler as he feels that his true purpose is to fight for his family and also win championships; he is a prizefighter who will fight until the end. Owens demonstrated that despite being a heel or face many have been supportive of him due to his compelling stories. Great examples include his rivalries against Sami Zayn, Finn Balor, and one that truly demonstrated why Owens is such an amazing talent was against Chris Jericho.
The Importance of the Festival of Friendship:
It is no secret that when fans talk about Kevin Owen’s career in WWE one of the main topics that will come is his run alongside Chris Jericho, their chemistry was always on point and they were some of the best acts from 2016-2017.

This run ended once Kevin turned on his “best friend” during their festival of friendship as it let the audience know that Owens will always turn on those that want to be there for him (similar to when Owens attacked his best friend Sami Zayn). Kevin Owens as a character is somebody that always walks alone despite past relationships and his history demonstrates it as the “festival of friendship” was done as a way of getting that point across in a simple yet shocking manner.
It is amazing when we look into the psychology of the characters that wrestlers portray, this is what makes wrestling intriguing. Kevin Owens understands his character but always keeps it fresh by bringing new aspects that are built upon what was already established. All I can say is that Owens is indeed a compelling character and I can’t wait to see what is next for him.
