John Cena is arguably one of the biggest names to ever set foot in a WWE ring. The legacy he has left in the company is not to be sniffed at. Whether you look at the number of championships Cena has won or his body of work in terms of storylines. Cena is a 16-time world champion, this means that he is one more title reign away from beating Ric Flair’s record. Now that Cena has seemed to make the transition to Hollywood its hard to see it happening. However, it would be nice to see an all-time great cap off a great career by breaking the record.
What legacy has Cena left in WWE?

Cena made his memorable debut in 2002 where he confronted Kurt Angle with the infamous “ruthless aggression” line. Since then, Cena cemented himself as the face of the company for a number of years. As previously stated, he has won multiple championships, and has created a legacy that will be hard to match. Cena has had many memorable runs with the top championship. The ones that come to mind are his feuds with the Rock and CM Punk over the belt. Cena’s last championship run came when he beat AJ Styles at the Royal Rumble in 2017. He was arguably the top performer in the company for over a decade and rewarded for this with good treatment.
Does he need to have the 17th championship?
If we have seen the last of Cena’s in-ring days, it would mark the end of a fantastic career. However, breaking Flair’s record would clearly boost his acclaim to be the G.O.A.T. You could argue that now that he spends most of his time in Hollywood there is no point in giving him the belt. Yet, WWE have done something similar in the past, this is when they brought back the Rock to win the championship in 2013. This shows that WWE have been willing to put the main belt on a part timer before.
When could Cena win the belt?

It is hard to see when Cena could win the belt in the next year. The reason for this is that it looks like Cody Rhodes will win the belt from Roman Reigns either at Summerslam or Wrestlemania . This suggests that we could be seeing Cena compete for the record-breaking championship sometime in 2024. This could lead to a show down between Rhodes and Cena. Yet, due to the introduction of the World Heavyweight Championship there are many options for Cena.
