CM Punk will be needing surgery to repair a broken bone and will therefore miss Forbidden Door. An interim AEW champion will be crowned at the pay-per-view between Jon Moxley and the winner of a battle royal.
Injuries are bound to happen in the world of professional wrestling, and no one is immune. Newly crowned AEW World Champion CM Punk is no exception as he announced that he is hurt and needs surgery.
Last night before Rampage, CM Punk asked fans to tune in for an announcement about the title and his career. His tweet read, “I’ll be on #AEWRampage live tonight with an important announcement in regards to the @aew world championship, and my career. Please tune in at 9 pm CST/10 pm EST.”
He appeared live and broke the news that he needs to take time off as he had a broken bone. He apologized but promised to be back soon, as he had vowed to go until the wheels fell off.
It’s an unfortunate announcement as his victory at Double or Nothing was a huge achievement, and a memorable night in AEW history. Although Punk said he would relinquish the title, that won’t be happening as Tony Khan announced a new opportunity.
Next Wednesday on Dynamite, a battle royal will be held to determine who faces Jon Moxley in the main event. The winner of this match will compete for the interim title at Forbidden Door against a competitor from NJPW.
The NJPW representative will be the winner of a match between Hiroshi Takahashi and Hirooki Goto at Dominion on June 26.
Remember that this past Wednesday, Punk’s Forbidden Door opponent was revealed to be The Ace of New Japan, Hiroshi Tanahashi. It’s unclear who the Japanese star will face now, but there’s a new chance for glory in this battle royal.
The show must go on, and Tanahashi will likely have a new opponent lined up before the promotion crossover. You can see clips from Punk’s announcement below.
